T2 latest update causes clicks and pops when I am rendering

I have had this problem in the past...

Do you have multipule clips on one track...or do you have a big clip that is split? I had this problem before and it seemed to pop at the beginning of each new clip, but if it goes away without final mix (and if this is the case) then just render once without final mix, and then render your render with final mix

Thanks for the replies everyone. If nothing else, I could temporarily render the tracks without mastering through Final Mix and then take the newly rendered .wav file and import it into a seperate new project where it won't get bogged down by all of the other tracks.
Concerning the slow hard drive, is my external Iomega better even though it is USB 2.0? It runs at 7200 RPM wheras the laptop's internal drive runs at 5400. I assumed that the USB factor would be a detriment. Any thoughts? What would be the most ideal external hard drive out there on the market if the Iomega isn't well suited? Also, I have two 512MB RAM (DDR333) sticks installed. Surely that is sufficient for now isn't it? I've been eyeing 1024 MB (DDR400) sticks but they haven't come down enough $$-wise yet. Honestly, if I had my way I'd be able to run upwards of 40 audio tracks and a few MIDI tracks as well plus plenty of EQ/comp/limiter VST's on most tracks. Most of my "paying" gigs have had 40-ish tracks on my old Roland VS unit (tons of submixing). When I bought this software I was assuming that I would be pretty set in these areas, but so far I keep running into limitations. I'm actually in between jobs right now and was using this down-time to switchover my set-up from hardware to software and get familiarized with the new system before I get busy again in the fall. Seems like I'm just as busy as ever trying to get things rolling with this computer set-up.

I originally had long clips flown in from another machine so that all 20 tracks were continuous. That was wretchedly unstable and I could never get the song to play through without massive hiccups. I then removed any silent areas on all of the tracks and that helped a bunch, however certain clips still stutter ("!") when T2 would play them (although in this case this particular song would render just fine without any bumps).

As long as you can get the full bandwidth of the USB2 port, it'll give pretty good performance. Try Sisofts' Sandra to see what throughout the drive is giving, and compare it to your internal.

Remember also that there is no reason why you couldn't make use of both, I.E. put some tracks on one drove, and some on another.

Generally Firewire is a little better than USB, but I've seen many reports of Firewire performance not being all that great under WinXP, so if your extrenal USB drive gives good performance, I'd stay put, if I were you.

1GB of RAM should be *plenty* unless you are working with very large soundfonts.

Two drives at once might be a good workaround for high track counts. Also, can you link me to the Sandra utility? Thanks![/quote]

I hooked up the external Iomega drive today and it does seem to handle things better than the laptop's internal drive. (Phew!) I actually located one set of audio clips that were causing the problem and copied and pasted an identical set of loops in their place from an earlier section in the song (identical guitar sections) and some of the dropouts went away. Why is that? Also, the little "!" still goes off on one particular spot on a different section of the song but I don't hear any drop-outs or clicks or stuttering. Looks like I'll be switching over to the Iomega for future tracking. Now I just need to find a place for it in my already stuffed backpack.
Besides looking for an explanation about why one clip would stutter in one spot but not if copied from another place in the song, how could I set up T2 to record using both the external and the internal hard drives at the same time? Wouldn't that offer more horsepower to T2?

Since upgrading to the new version, my copy of Final Mix seems to click a lot - on the same stuff I had no problems with at all pre-upgrade. I just tried it on one stereo 24 bit wav and it clicks, I've already defragged last night so it's not a disk activity issue. I've pumped my latency settings up to 50ms but it still happens regardless, so I guess it's not latency. Final Mix is definitely the culprit somehow?

I also have bad sound with finalmix on some tracks. Not on all.

I can't seem to duplicate the rendering problems with FinalMix. Can one of you who is seeing the problems give me a step by step way to reproduce it? Or even better send in a stripped down edit archive (zipp it first) to techmail@mackie.com attention me? It needs to be less then 10MB for our email server. Or post it somewhere where I can download it.
Thanks,
Ben

Just to mix it up a bit, I deleted my instance of Final Mix & presets from my plugins folder, ripped the 'Final Mix Tracktion' & presets from my Tracktion 1 install on my laptop and dropped it into my plugins folder on my desktop - works a treat on everything that was clicking. This makes me think there's definitely something up with my upgrade version of Final Mix.
