Drums in Tracktion?

Hi,
I have been rewiring Reason to Tracktion (T1) and been using Reason to do all my midi work.
I was going to try doing a tune completely within T1. I don't, however, see anything in the Set Program menu that includes a snare drum, ride or crash cymbal.
I play guitar and I wonder: is it possible to do a complete song with nothing more than T1, and with nothing else added to it? Or do I need to come up with drums (or anything beyond the 127 progs included with T1) from another source?
Sorry about the complete noobness in this post :dog:

Yes, drums will need to come from another source. Reason is what's considered a "soft studio" meaning that it's meant to function all in one. Tracktion is not such a beast. ;) There are many drum solutions you can find for free, but at the end of the day you DO need to find drums somewhere.

Just to be completely accurate, in theory you could use the Tracktion sampler and your own (found or created) drum sounds, so if you really wanted to do it as an experiment, it "could" be done in just T.

But the short answer is-- you need something else.

I think the issue here is he's using the menu for setting the program change for an external synth. I think he needs to read up on Filters, both VST and ReWire.

Could be, now that I re-read. Carry on, carry on.

When I highlight the midi input symbol (on the left side), the work area shows settings for action, midi filter, channel, program, and alias. There's also a green button that reads "set program". When I press that, a pop up menu appears from which I can select any one of 128 sounds included with Tracktion: various strings, pads, brass, fx, etc. Is this the external synth you're talking about? 'Cause I can choose any sound I want from the list and play it with my midi controller.
I didn't see anything about drum kits or sounds, though. I know there is a steel drum, wood block, reverse cymbal and the like included. I just didn't see anything about kits or basic sounds (i.e. kick drum, ride cymbal, hihat, etc.) I didn't know if I was missing something or not. I guess Tracktion doesn't come with any kits. So I downloaded a vst drum synth. Now I can have drums in my songs without having to unnecessarily rewire to Reason, which is all I wanted to do.

Right now you're playing the sounds from your soundcard's built-in soundfonts. These aren't included with T and likely don't sound so great. Do a search here for VST instruments (just like the drum one you already found. I'd recommend looking for Synth1 to start with, that should be plenty for now. Install it and play with it a bit, then check back here if you have any questions. And read the manual, that will help a lot.

This post knocked me on my ass. It made me realize what I've been missing. Funny how a little bit of enlightenment can open up a world of possibilities.
All hail braj! :hail:

Glad I could help, though I don't deserve to be hailed (just ask anyone, I'm sure they'll agree) :)

One more thing: There's lots of free VSTs you should check out before you buy anything.

I discovered that while searching for Synth1. I had to change my shorts as a result.
What I have learned today is simply un-freaking-believable...
