So I've heard. I think it's a sub-function of the "psychoanalyze-zippy" command.

I can vi too, but prefer to have a nice kitchen sink handy just in case. :-)

VI took some getting used to, me being from the wonderful world of GUIs. Never really checked EMACS, I don't think it's installed on Jaguar by default. Maybe I should Fink it someday.
Still, syntax-highlighting is nice, so I guess I won't be using it as my HTML-editor.

emacs does syntax highlighting for any number of langauges. I even set up a highlighting parser for my own QML, an ultra-simple "quick markup language" I wrote for our interns to use.

BTW, Chase -- I would NOT recommend either vi or my beloved emacs for your purposes. Both are powerful but hard-core tools that would only get in your way. You need something straightforward and clear. :-) tetraplan and I are just nattering on, that's all.

that's why i loved frontpage. You can do just about anything with it if you know how, but even a beginner can do the basics.

"Emacs is a great operating system, but Unix has a better editor".

You should give Composer a go. Its part of mozilla and its a full WYSIWHYG web-page builder thingie.

As mentioned in another thread there is Nvu which is an open-source HTML editor based on the Mozilla Composer code. It also includes tools for managing an entire site.

wysiwyg is fun to say. Seriously, i just said it out loud right now.

i agree with everyone else that says m$ products suck for web page design (and most other things as well). give html a go, it's really not much harder than bbcode.

EDIT: actually i take that back, visual studio has a semi decent web page editor.

i just downloaded emacs and  ... it's got a lot of stuff there. what's with all the nonstandard shortcuts though? and what's a practical use of emacs over a standard text editor?

Thanks for the tip, LBN. Nvu looks brilliant. It's about time an open source project produced a better HTML editor. Adding site management and better CSS features -- among other things -- to Mozilla Composer is a brilliant move by the Linspire people who headed this up. With Gimp and Nvu, I should finally be able to easily complete sites without any licensed software. Cool!

Why you need any kind of editor? Just use notepad or any plain text editor like the rest of us. Never fails and has all the features you can think of :D

Well, if you'd decide to look stuff up on UseNet or IRC, you could do it with EMACS. Or play .mp3s to relax to.
It could possibly make your coffee for those long editing nights, too[1].
People even use it to make music[2].

[1] I just made that bit up.
[2] I'm not making that bit up. Just scroll down the page.

i like to experiment with Swishmax. if you are a student or teacher you get a 80 percent discount. it's 20 dollars and it does a lot of stuff that Flash does. this is really cool for musicians to use cause it opens up a lot of creative possibilities with coding sounds into your site. you could design a loop machine that triggers with keys on the keyboard and it would export in a flash file.
also the demo is fully functional for two weeks which is cool.
