hello guys... I had noticed 3 things with Tracktion that I would like to confirm if possible.

1) Using Reason 3.03 (or 3.0) through Rewire on the newest version of Tracktion is really slow on Reason's end. e.g. Adding devices, loading samples .etc in Reason is very slow compared to running Reason standalone. Just to confirm, I tried the same Rewire operation with Cubase SX and Reason 3 and Reason was way more responsive and fast. This basically makes Reason loadig times for songs and useability quite bad when being used with Tracktion.

2) There are many colours which may not be currently adjusted with the colour editor. I know what you're thinking ... who cares ? lol But I have definately noticed some things that can't be touched (please correct me if I'm wrong here)...

- Tracktion large text in the settings page
- VU meters in the main project page

3) (Not a big deal) but switching between the project browser, project and settings tabs takes a lot longer than in Version 1, is this due to the skinning ? Just thought I should mention that observation.

Wuite a few more which I can list for you in detail if you like.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

I suspect that your numbers 1 and 3 relate to the GUI slowdown issue that some of us have experienced since the change to T2. It seems as though something in the background is seriously hogging resources...

On some systems (including mine) it is really noticeable; others claim they have no problems with this.

I can specifically confirm that the Reason issue is the same here, and is one of the reasons that I use an alternative Rewire host for Reason now... (the other being the note-dropping issue discussed elsewhere) which kind of makes it a deal-breaker, I guess.

I found that the GUI problem also leads to clicks and pops when recording audio... i.e. a glitch in the GUI updating itself results in artefacts in the recording itself. Again, a real problem here, but some seem not to experience this.

I've not seen confirmation that anyone from Mackie is looking into this issue either, but hopefully somebody might be able to confirm that the VERY slow GUI response in T2 is being looked at?

Many of the other issues with T2 are already adressed in the latest update, but this one's a biggie still :help:

headquest, just wanted to say thanks for your response :D I was quite unsure about the Rewire issue (my biggest concern) after having searched the KvR and Mackie forums with no joy. I guess i'll check out ableton live or something, I'm just trying to decide on the right sequencer and Reason is gonna be a huge part of my workflow.

To be honest ... I think i'll wait around a little .. coz if these 3 issues get resolved (especially Rewire), I think i'll definately go with Tracktion 2. Love it :)

I tried Acid and noticed the exact same problem with its Rewire engine, Reason runs like crap while rewired thru Acid which makes me wonder whether it is a partially a ReWire Bug ..

Thanks again

This is one of the few outstanding issues with Tracktion, which is in so many other ways a truly superb program.

I use Ableton Live and Reason via Rewire on an almost daily basis and I must say it is absolutely rock solid. The two integrate very tightly and complement each other very well, also. For example, many of us Reason users would love to see the Props introduce an FM synth into the rack. So what have Ableton done? - only released Operator, which is a fantastic FM synth. Live + Reason is a fairly comprehensive package.

On the other hand, I think that Tracktion has some other advantages, and especially the Mackie mixing and mastering plugs...

Love it too in so many ways. The GUI issue is a biggie though, because of the problems it causes.

At the moment I am looking at using my copy of T2 as a mastering environment because I love Final Mix so much, and find it so easy to use and time-saving. Now that the rendering issues in T2 are resolved (thank you Mackie!) I will bring in .wav renders done in Live/Reason and put them through Final Mix.

At least that keeps me in the Tracktion loop and gives me a fantastic use for the software while this other issue awaits a fix.
I tried Acid and noticed the exact same problem with its Rewire engine, Reason runs like crap while rewired thru Acid which makes me wonder whether it is a partially a ReWire Bug ..

Can't speak for Acid as I've not used it. But you said yourself Rewire works fine with Cubase/Reason, so the problem is not with Rewire itself, surely? I have tried rewiring Reason into FL Studio, Adobe Audition, Sonar PE4 as well as Live 4 and beta5 - all without problem.

I hope this helps you!

Not necessarily correct. As we know, various apps install their own version of the rewire.dll file. It may be worth searching your hard drives to see how many are installed, and where.

I *think* and maybe someone can correct me if i'm wrong, that different apps will search their own app.path for a rewire.dll to use before trying things like %windir%/system32

Tracktion still installs an older version of the rewire dll, unless you specifically ask it not to.

So if you have multiple copies of rewire.dll, check which is newest, maybe zip up and archive the others in case of disaster, and then delete the older ones.

Gotta be worth a try anyway

hey :) yep, your post definately makes sense, the UI issues are definately quite significant. Tracktion is a fairly bug free program I have found too ... It's just a shame that the bugs are so prominent for most users.

I am trying out Ableton live right now, it does look nice although I am finding the UI a little confusing to begin with but i'll play with it...

I'm not going to buy for at least another month anyway so I think I'll spend this time to try what's out there... so far I have the following observations...

Acid - Bad VSt, Bad Rewire, Terribly latency (with my audio card, Echo Layla3G ASIO driver)

Cubase - Expensive, I don't like how this company works i.e. releasing a program too quickly then constantly providing updates to fix the bugs which should have been fixed before release. Also unflexible Rewire routing. Non-draggable inserts. (my opinion, please don't be offended if you are a happy SX user).

Tracktion - Outstanding issues as mentioned.

Ableton Live - Yet to be examined

Project 5 - Yet to be examined (Skeptical)

Can anyone confirm if/when this is being looked into? Some info simnply saying that it is a recognised issue which will be addressed would really help here! :help:

The demo of version 4 includes a series of on-screen tutorials that take you through the basics - well worth spending half an hour going through those.

If you downloaded the version 5 beta, the tutorials aren't included... but Live 5 is sceduled for full release this weekend, so I imagine there will be a demo that will include tutorials shortly. 8)

I agree with your assessment (previous Cubase SX user - defected to Tracktion about 2 years ago) and I think a lot of people here will agree with you

If you look at the Project 5 demo, make sure you have a decent Registry cleaning tool to run afterwards...

I recently had some major computer issues. I was advised (by somebody on the Adobe Audition forum) to clean my registry. I got a tool called Registry Medic recommended in Sound on Sound by Martin Walker (available here, costs $29.95: www.iomatic.com ) which identified more than 2,300 bad registry entries and related problems/issues. :-o

The vast majority of the 2,300+ problems related to my VST folder and to junk left behind inthe registry by three demos that I had previously long removed :-o - the offending parties being P5v2, Sonar 4 and FL5. Out of existing software I have, Adobe Audition and Ahead Nero seemed to have created a lot of junk.

Tracktion, Ableton Live and Reason had not created any rubbish in the registry at all 8) :)

Having run the Registry Medic my whole system is like new again. It is especially noticeable, as you would expect, when running Audition. I had noticed it running slow and struggling to do normal tasks in recent months, but now it runs super fast again. A revelation :D

Yeah we have heard comlaints on GUI slowness but it doesn't happen in every system. We're taking a look.

Good tip. But I had already removed unwanted ones (every demo seems to install another rewire.dll  )

I understood it to be that you should just leave the one in windows/system32 and delete the others. This is my usual practice.

Rebirth and Reason install the rewire.dll in system32 (as do Live and Audition). I noticed that some others, including Tracktion and FL Studio, add their own .dll files. I always delete them. Is this correct?

Definately slower here...even The OS windows crawl a bit.
Seems to help by freezing/or rendering plug heavy tracks.
Could be a slow hardrive too

headquest: hey thanks a lot for the tips. Ableton is definately looking like the best option at the moment (even though its a little expensive compared to Project 5). I've never liked VST support in Cakewalk software but I think i'll still give P5 a try. Its a shame it plays with the registry :?

I appreciate you confirming this Ben, I may wait around to see how Tracktion develops in the next month or so. Is there any info I can provide to help you detect the bug ? I am running a P4 2.8 GHz with HT (HT is on), umm Intel chipset, 1 SATA 200 GB hard disk, 1 IDE 200 GB hard disk, 1 GB of Ram, Windows XP with SP2, ATI Radeon 9200 ... ummm, 1 burner, 1 dvd driver, 1 dvd burner (hehe a lotta drives) ... ummm and an Echo Layla3G audio card.

Would you guys believe that the Cakewalk FTP has been down all day since yesterday so I can't even try the demo ! 8) lol

Thanks guys, you're all great

If you need more help or have questions about Live 5, here is a thread I started recently which has had nearly 12000 hits and 270 or so posts. So most of the KVR Ableton users are looking and you can get their attention there! -

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=92139

Somewhere in those 19 pages there's also a comparisson with P5v2 (pros and cons). Hope that helps.

Questions about Tracktion of course belong on this specific bit of the KVR forum, and you are bound to get lots of helpful advice here 8) .

Good luck mate!
