No, it was a few posts up. I take full responsibility for my misspellings. Now if ron really wants us to start correcting spelling and grammar.....Lunch Money wrote:Really? I don't see the 'edited 1 time' line beneath Braj's post...
Ron, you wrote "im" instead of "I'm".

Lunch, you placed a full-stop -- or, if you must: 'period' -- after, rather than before, the final quote in that last sentence.

I don't believe those hyphens should be doubled there, Valley. Is that the Queen's official way of using hyphens?valley wrote:Lunch, you placed a full-stop -- or, if you must: 'period' -- after, rather than before, the final quote in that last sentence.
Anyone remember the proper use of prepositions? It's been a long time since I was in the third grade.

Those aren't hyphens, they are em dashes. However, they were used incorrectly. They should be attached directly the the preceding word, but separated from the next, thusly:
This sentence-- like many other sentences-- contains em dashes.
My full-stop, however, was placed at the correct location.

Curiously though, my keyboard seems to lack a long-hypen key. Double hypens, whilst ugly, do serve the purpose of distinguishing between hypens and long dashes. Now whether using long dashes to break sentences is good grammar is a different subject entirely.braj wrote: I don't believe those hyphens should be doubled there, Valley.
I do not believe the Queen is in the habit of laying down stylistic, or syntactic guides for proper written English. I believe, though I may be wrong, that this is what they invented the New York Times for.Is that the Queen's official way of using hyphens?
Yup, and if you are objecting to prefixing prepositions with commas, it is permissable. I'll be the first to admit it is hardly best practise, but it isn't wrong per se.Anyone remember the proper use of prepositions? It's been a long time since I was in the third grade.
That said, I don't hold a lot of truck with the "no split infinitives" law, because I've yet to be convinced that the English language truly has infinitives. You may feel that inherently disqualifies me from having an opinion, so this whole conversation may well be moot[1].
[1] Moot conversations being something of an Internet speciality, of course.

Hmm, you say that, and I have a funny feeling I've been caught out by this before. I think the English and American/Canadian laws differ slightly on this, and a few other points.Lunch Money wrote:was placed at the correct location.

Canadian English is still the Queen's English. What was significant was the context. Were I quoting a phrase or spoken language (even a single word) I would have needed the period inside the quotation marks:
"This room is not," said Bob, "tidy."
(though it's awkward and would have worked better as '"This room," said Bob, "is not tidy."' Like the quotation within the quotation? Tricky tricky....)
I've also been wrong before, and perhaps it's time to pull out a grammar guide to be certain, before I imply that I'm absolutely correct.

Ron, you are missing a subject, capitalization, and have disagreement between your implied subject and your informal salutation. Furthermore, you failed to construct a proper contraction-- the very offence for which you chastised the young Braj. This is the way we use it in French. I thought I had to point this out, since our respective grammar rules are "just" completely different otherwise, mind you."This room is not," said Bob, "tidy."

I believe this should be 'Who's up to coding that for which I've wished?"Lunch Money wrote: "You are a bunch of freaking geeks, men. Let's get back on topic, discussing TrackPad. Who's up to coding that which I wished for?"
