Much more thorough and pretty complimentary.

Post

More balanced, too (as one would expect)

Also there's a T2 tutorial article in the new issue of Music Tech mag, written by one of their regular writers who has apparently abandoned his previous DAW in favour of Tracktion 8)

they haven't gotten around to updating the site yet, so any highlights to share?
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!

Only skimmed it once as I couldn't concentrate after the day's events in London.

It pretty much covered all the bases, pretty positive throughout. They were sceptical that any more features could be added without compromising the workflow and interface. I'd say that perhaps they under-estimate the man ;)

It did feature a spot the redering issue, but said that they'd spoken to Mackie who said the a fix was on it's way - I'm assuming that's the one already out now.

WTF???? :o

Just picked up my copy: the 'rendering and dither' box-out describes the problem fairly accurately.. but then says that he couldn't reproduce it at all.. and goes on to say 'in future Tracktion will only automatically employ dither when exporting 32-bit tracks' SoS has seriously dropped in my estimations..

if anyone is worried, the render bug is fixed, and dither is now only applied to 16-bit files, and only when dither is turned on. 8)

hm, but maybe we should thank sos for asking mackie if this will be fixed, seems like the bugfix came out shortly after they've asked ;) so, here's your lesson mackie : release bugfixes as soon as possible, and not up to 2 weeks after it has been fixed (build was nearly 2 weeks old when it was released) , you'll never know who'll write a review !

Having said above that the SOS review is more "balanced" I read it again this morning, and I don't actually think it's very glowing at all... if I was in the market for a new/different sequencer, I doubt the SOS review would even inspire me to check out the demo

It's certainly a real contrast to the rave 10/10 hypr-fest reviews in CM, FM and MTM.

Stuff like this is hardly flattering:

"While the promotional literature makes claims about a "revolutionary" user interface it would probably be fairer to describe Tracktion's edit page as "evolutionary". It doesn't in my opinion represent an enormous departure from conventional sequencer design, although it arguably does a better job than most of presenting the standard features..."

And how about the sarcasm in this:

"Movies are displayed in an entirely seperate window. This is understandable, since there's no way but the smallerst of video players could have been incorporated directly into the Edit window (i.e. it's already crowded...). Even so, having a seperate movie window - which disappears from view the moment you click anywhere in the Edit window - is a bit of a pain, and perhaps not the kind of thing you'd expect from an application with a "revolutionary" user interface."

Ouch! :-o

And then:

"Another, stranger quirk concerns showing and hiding the movie window. The "proper" method for doing this is to click the "options" button, then either check or uncheck the "Show Quicktime move window" option in the pop-up menu that appears. This works perfectly well. However, if like me, you make the mistake of closing the movie window... you may find it then becomes impossible to get the movie window back. Even reloading the file afresh didn't provide a fail-safe cure for this."

And in conclusion the review says:

"If the primary goal of Tracktion's developers is, as the promotional literature suggests, to develop an intuitive user interface with everything visible in a single screen, then they may fast be approaching a problem. Tracktion is already complex. Presently it succeeds in allowing easy and comfortable access to a large number of parameters mostly within one window. However, its hard to see how very many more features could be added without entailing some deviation from the everything-at-a-glance philosophy..."

And on top of this of course there's the long-winded boxout specifically about the rendering bug, it's causes and cures.

They do say lots of positive stuff as well, of course! But taken as a whole I would describe their enthusiasm as "muted". The review is supported by some rather unflattering and slightly grainy screenshots, and isn't even mentioned on the front cover, even though Mackie's X200 mixer is the headline act in the picture. There's a far more positive review of Logic Express also in this issue.

I don't think the review is unfair at all, but it does provide a bit of a contrast to the hyped reviews published by *the others*.

Perhaps in some ways it's rather refreshing to see a review that doesn't gloss over and ignore the negatives? (isn't that the supposed purpose of reviews?)

I think it's their editorial policy to be, erm, very thorough in finding faults. They probably have a quota system or something! It is better than the 'innit brilliant' approach of the other mags though.

Just have a look at the reviews of the Arturia stuff or even this month's Minimonsta review if you don't believe me - I do wonder if the developers shouldn't just hire Gordon Reid as a consultant and be done with it!

Maybe Mackie can further develop the tab concept they have already with Tracktion if they want to further enhance it feature wise.

I just came from Cubase SX and Tracktion 2 is a breath of affordable fresh air. :)
Leave ones footprint in that of the mind not the physical world. We have screwed it over enough.

Yeah, I didn't agree with that point in the review, I must admit!

How would a video thumbnail track be a problem for example? Or a better time-stretch? Or half of the FR made here? I think that Mackie could preserve the workflow and put in new features, no problem!

have any of you possibly thought that maybe mackie didn't pay as much as logic dev's did?....

I would love to have dedicated tabs for other fonctions otherwise put in submenus (that is, mainly, a controllers/MTC/MMC/shortcuts tab)
