So when I expanded my 'studio' I thought I'd be a clever guy and get a patchbay, and sort out stuff all proper like. Which of course, means twice as many beeding cables.

And since the sound studios at work got switched over to Digi002's, I got my pick of the old cabling, which was all based on top-quality Neutrik stereo jack plugs. And about a hundred metre of cable, over various 2-5m chunks.

But not quite as many plugs as I actually need, given the patchbay. And having priced them up they come to about £2.35 each in bulk. I need about 50 of them, which is about £115! Bloody hell!

And now I just bought a Doepfer modular, which I need to make up patch cables for cos I dont really want those moulded things y'get. With steel 2.5mm connectors and some decent shielded cabling(*), thats gonna be about another £40-£50.

Throw in some good quality phonos for a few odds and sods, and its gonna come to about £200 in frigging cables and plugs. Bloody hell again!

I could buy another friggin synth for that. :-o :-o

Oh yeah, and I now think I need another patchbay for my effects pedals now that Im up to about fifteen of them. I seem to be building an effects-pedal modular.

Why did I decide to buy real stuff again?

(*) BTW for anyone who's made up their own patchleads for a modular; what kinda cable/wire did you go for?

Rabbyt,

Try Maplins. Their Van Damme range of cable is high quality and reasonably priced.

For connectors I'd always go for Neutrik. Even their less expensive ranges perform better in the real world than any over-priced boutique plugs I've seen. Their more expensive plugs are simply the best at any price.

The 'unbalanced phono patch cable' stuff? Any idea what the overall diameter of that is?

Yeah, its Neutrik's Ive got, and am sticking with. Maplin are charging £3.99 each for them (the NP3C stereo jack) though!

Jonny X quoth good job you didn't need some sort of MIDI chain as well

Everything goes on a MIDI interface of its very own, of which Ive got six, luckily... (2 via Remote keyboards, 2 via my soundcard, 1 on an Edirol UR80, and 1 joystick port adaptor)

4.8 - 4.85 for both the balanced and unbalanced.

Never forget to have a container full of various plug adaptors. Vey handy when your trying to connect one thing to another.

Hmmmm. The 2.5mm jacks I was going for can handle 4.2mm max.

Oh bollocks, why am I looking at 2.5mm jacks; I need 3.5mm jacks for the Doepfer. What a dick.

Okay, RS do a Neutrik 3.5mm stereo jack that would do. I'll order up a few metres of that cabling and see how it goes... Ta much, nuffink.

All cables are but one part of a huge and greedy collective entity that have declared war on us puny humans. You cannot win. I have nearly a thousand bucks in my modular cables alone...I swear, when the power is up in the studio, I can sense them all vibrating in smug satisfaction...
