I think they need to be set 'read-only' .. I have to say though, presets for a de-esser???
You need to tune this plug to the sibilance in your vocal and set the threshold to the right level to duck the sibilance, but not anything else.. this is not something a preset designer can do for you I'm afraid!

dude, I'm just north of clueliss with this stuff. I write good songs I don't use much effects and I'm
just trying to upgrade from garage band and find a decent plugin that will help me with my
questionable vocals. any ideas would be greatly appreciated

What is questionable about them? Unless there is some sibilance (ie: over-exaggerated 's' sounds) the DSR is probably not what you need..
.. if you do have sibilance, you need to tune the plug to the same frequency as the 's' sounds in your vocal, and then set the threshold control so that only the 's' sounds go above it. The ratio then sets how much the sibilance is ducked..

Singing lessons?
Antares Autotune is the original pitch correction plug, but there are others available now too, try searching the database here for 'pitch shifters'
For a 'stronger output' you probably need a compressor.. thats too big a question for me to go into now though, I'm off to bed in a minute!
