My portuguese is, errr....minimal. I love it and want to learn it more. I speak Spanish pretty well, but portuguese is completely different regardless of the minor similarities. The "Do" word has complexed me quite a bit. I asked a native speaker what it meant and in what contexts it is used, and she couldn't really give me a straight answer. "It just depends", she said. The contest entry I posted earlier in this thread, Beleza, was written with a combination of the minor Portuguese understanding I possess and some help from babelfish. It was cool to hand it off to a native speaker and get some feedback. He said it was correct, but very formal. He also said nobody would really say it that way. I guess it's kinda like the difference, in English, between saying "It's so great to be chillin outside that I don't miss that crammy cubicle at all" and "I like being outside and because of that, I don't miss my crammed cubicle at all". Hmmm...I just had a thought...in spanish if you want to say something similiar you would say, "Samba de la Noche". Day being masculine and night being feminine. If night were masculine the spanish equivalent would be "Samba del Noche". Perhaps in Portuguese they combine the feminine with "Do" so instead of "Samba Do la noite" it is "Samba da Noite". Just pondering really, without a good enough understanding.
