imagine someone moving the volume levels for you. if you compress, it kind of smushes the wav display. limiting simply doesnt smush, just closes in on the wav. if you compress something a lot, it smushes the signal, depending on how fast attack and release is. you know like that banner on here that shows a hammer hitting the wav signals? thats all it is. then you do makeup volume so you can turn it up louder without clipping!

but i think down works from the top down EG: squashes down, & upward pushes it up from the bottom,
well thats wot it sounds like to me

Yes my brain was working slowly when I read it. I have reread it and it is a easy as I thought it should be. I just couldnt get my head around the up down thing. I am still trying to work out the use of the upword compression.PT wrote:It's explained in the manual.

Oh well, better late than never.. 
Compression reduces dynamic range, expansion increases it.
Downward compression is the type you all know and love: nothing happens until the signal exceeds the threshold, at which point the gain is reduced. Upward compression leaves the signal unchanged so long as it is above the threshold level, but when it drops below the gain is increased.
So: downward compression turns the loud bits down, while upward compression turns the quiet bits up, but both reduce the difference in volume between quiet and loud bits.
Expansion is the opposite: upward expansion turns the loud bits up, while downward expansion turns the quiet bits down: both of these increase the difference between the quiet and loud bits.

Ok, appropriate time for the big question...
Why does IQ4 freeze in T1?
It seems to operate perfectly until I start fiddling with knobs and then it just goes kaput...
As long as I don't manipulate the plug it behaves normally. As soon as I start to twiddle I have about 10 secs until everything "glues". And I say that because after that point any knob motion has zero affect. Anybody else experience this?

It doesn't crash...it just stalls...
When I have live audio running throuh it and change the parameters with my mouse I have about 20 sec. of playtime before the sliders have no effect. So yes, after it stops reacting to my actions I still hear the effect of where it is visually, but any attempt to change this results in a value of zero change...The sliders still move, but the audio does not...
