mastering advice link fix

Ok, I have been working by myself on an album for a couple months here. It is now impossible to hear my stuff objectivly.
If you all could give some advice as to the overall compression/EQ of this track, it might set me off in the right direction with the rest of my stuff.
This is not mastered. I have turned off the FM for now. Just trying to get the mix right first.

you might want to put it away for a while and get dis-associateed with the project. When you get back to it, you will have freash ears.

make sure all your tracks are pretty low in levels, make it so that everything maxes out to about -6dB, so when you do crank it up with some final mix, it wont be messy.
in the eq area, i suggest to carve out spaces for each instrument. unless you want it muddy
i mean carve by literally pulling down frequencies you dont want. alone each track will sound weird, but together it will fit like a jigsaw.
if you dont want to take a break (like me) pop in some of your favorite cd's that you want to sound similar to. that will clean out your ideas and will help you!

oh and about that make sure your mix peaks at -6dB, dont forget to turn your monitors/speakers up to compensate. then when you boost it at the end, BAMMMM!

If you are still in the mixing stage, it's a good idea to give every track its own piece of real estate What I mean is don't pan any 2 tracks the same. Years ago I was taught to look at the audio spectrum like a photograph. Putting it another way, you don't want six foot uncle Harry standing in front of five year old Mary, Actually you don't want anyone standing in front of any one else. So if you have 24 people in a photograph they will all be standing side by side. Usually the kick and the bass are centered, so you would put rhe kick at 11:45 or 12:00 and the bass at 12:00 or 12:15 respectivly. They're almost centered but they occupy their own piece of real estate. It is also a good idea to mix in mono first to make sure there is no phase problems, and to make sure everything is heard and in balance, then do your panning

Though panning is useful, it never struck me as a solution to a messy sound. I've heard too many great mono mixes where the sounds don't interfere with each other.
Yes, take a break. Not a short, listen to a few CDs, type of break but a few days or even weeks if you can.
You can spend a lot of time doing a mix and think it sounds great. Listen to it the next day and you think, "what was I thinking. This is horrible."

Thats a good point. I usually save some of my projects over the years, and it helps me gage my progress. I can listen to some mixes done a few years ago, and like you said "what was I thinking"

no i set the first comp with a tight attack & quite a bit of threshhold & ratio
the 2'nd i set loose with a bit of make up gain to help it sit abouve the mix (but thats how i l1ke my vox takes to sound)
