you shouldn't have - the easily most beautyful Camel album of all is imo Rajaz (1999) - This album is just incredible - intense, warm, melancholic and yet euphoric at times. It's all what makes Camel so good on one album without a just a single weak moment.emdot_ambient wrote:It wasn't their fault. Camel had an amazing run of terrific albums but just were never hyped as much as other prog rockers, yet to me they epitomized that style. And ultimately they went away because prog rock did. I lost track of them after Peter Bardens left them--RIP, he died in 2002.Meffy wrote:Camel should be better known. They're still around but as far as I know they've never had the success they deserve.
Bands that could've become true legends, but instead. . ..

Captain Beyond? Puh-leeze. They were popular among the kids I hung out with at the time their first record came out, and that album did have a nice sound to it, but I actually saw them in a hockey arena in Dayton Ohio when they were touring that stuff, and they were remarkably lame. I remember commenting to a guitarist buddy of mine immediately afterwards "Bobby Caldwell is a fine drummer. The rest is just noise."geoffrey wrote:Trapeze, Captain Beyond, Fever Tree? My record collection is full of groups like this...
Now, if you want to talk about might-have-been-legends from the early seventies, what about Atomic Rooster?

OK, I'm an early Cure fan, basically falling away after Pornography, and I think the three peice Cure could have done a lot more really cool stuff. I really liked Robert Smith's guitar stuff on the early albums. Does that count? The Cure has been many different bands over the years.

They are legends, just on a fairly small scale... at least for the rabiate zealots*) that follow all things Tortoise, The For Carnation, Papa M etc.
Yeah, but they still seem to crop up referred to by other bands (or as a comparison yardstick used by reviewers) more than as a band in and of themselves?
BTW What d'you think of Pajo's new album?

An idiot on Set Theory:

8 pages....and no one has mentioned The Chameleons???? Too melancholy to be big like U2 (though they did get some AOR radio even here in the states), and not melancholy enough to be big like The Cure, they did make 3 great albums...then split up because of the death of their manager(???).
Also, already mentioned: MBV, Stone Roses, Morcheeba

Eloy - they did a lot of crap er - I mean no-so-good-stuff but they've got some highlights amongst their ~20 albums - oh and while where at 'krautrock' - don't forget Birth Control - if you listen to gamma ray you must admit that they should have become huuuge...Scot Solida wrote:(quickly jotting down a list of bands Geoffrey has mentioned for further exploration)

'They' (the two of them) only had two albums, then it was a Roland Orzabald (sp?) solo gig.SecondSkin wrote:I was going to say that also...big as they were, it seemed they had more potential.Lovesign wrote:Tears For Fears ?
My first girl and I got together because we both liked their first album. It was something to talk about when we were 15.

they split up because Curt Smith's astrologican (or however you call them in English) recommended it...braj wrote:'They' (the two of them) only had two albums, then it was a Roland Orzabald (sp?) solo gig.SecondSkin wrote:I was going to say that also...big as they were, it seemed they had more potential.Lovesign wrote:Tears For Fears ?

apologies?
for making it hard to find cds by these bands or for forcing me into obscurity by liking my stuff

The most recent Tears For Fears release is pure sonic bliss. Perfectly crafted modern (classic)pop. Brilliant production. Well worth a listen to anyone with a broad knowledge pop history.
