I think, personally, that whether you're too old or not really depends on what you're trying to do, and how well you do it. Some people age slowly and some people can pull off moves/clothes better than people half their age.. which is good of course.. but not everyone has these abilities, so those who can't, shouldnt. Rock band wise.. i think it would depend on the band. It's one thing to be in a rock band when you're 50, but it's different when you're jumping up and down on stage trying to act like you're 25. Thats pathetic. If, on the other hand you're very good at it, and you look good doing it, then why the hell shouldnt you. So anyways, i think its all subjective. Doesnt matter how good you are some people will still dislike what you do.

1. it's like ya skimmed the topic, saw the word "money", and reacted. i'm just tryin to get a band together. makin a livin at would be great, but i'm in it for the feeling...the fun. if i could find a few crazy ass mofos like myself, we could get gigs. i don't care if it's tips or just "hey look, a band". it's about playing live, THAT is all
2. about losing the skull - what good will it do me me to find some limp bastards? they gotta know who i am up front
Like I said, I wasn't sure what your situation was so I was giving you my two cents from my point of view. You never mentioned doing it for fun, you never mentioned how old you were, and you had the line 'they think I should concentrate on makin' money' - I was following the assumption that you were looking for gigs to make cash.

The flaming skull is a little cheesy (just my opinion). You need some cooler graphics of a flaming skull if that's what you want and the biker connotation in it is a little off-putting (at least to myself). You should try an ad in the local paper if you want to reach people - cast a wider net to catch more fish. Hell, I don't even go to the music store anymore so your missing a large demographic.

Mark77 said what I was saying only a little clearer - thanks, man.

It's cool if you just want the feeling of playing live - but you also need to ask yourself "should I be putting an audience through this misery?" if you're not good and it's painful on the eyes and ears.

Every so often it's important to re-evaluate your reasons for doing it.

And now, as KvR is mainly a hobbyist site for people to have fun and explore their creative side, I'm going to shut up. :hihi:

In my opinion anyone who says someone is too old to be in a rock band is just stuck in the past. There's this image of rock as young person's music... well it used to be because it was new, young people played it, young people listened to it... but times have moved on, now those people have got older, should they stop loving it... of course not.

There was a time when Jazz was outrageous new stuff played by young rebels.... now you can go to gigs with players who are in their 80s and even 90s, and they get respect, not ridicule, they may not be able to play as fast or as loud as they used to, but they've got a lifetime's experience of finding the right notes.

As for MTV, you can always take the ZZ Top approach and just fill up the videos with girls and hotrods :-)

I play drums in a Gospel Quartet on the side and during a festival a few weeks ago I proudly watched another quartet led by a 91 year old bass singer. And he was nailing his parts too, doing all the great Gospel Quartet bass singer hand motions that we all love and appreciate here on KVR. :)

If he can get up there at 91 then I see nothing wrong with any age for any type of music. Ronnie James Dio is in his mid sixties and he still plays the purest form of heavy metal out there.

If you still feel it, you're good to go. The problem
lies with people that lose the feel but continue to play. Eddie Van Halen is a good example of that and ruins it for everyone.

Shit, I am on the cusp of becoming 25, and I worry every day about my ability to make relevant music and convey it to an increasingly youthful audience.

My Fiance's father just got "let go" from his main band because they said he looked too old. Which to me is f#cking rediculous, who the f#ck cares if you have been around longer, he could play far better than most, but when you are playing hard/dark music, i suppose you are definitely catering to a certain age bracket audience.

I suppose deep down inside I have to believe that as long as you put your "soul" into it, and perform with everything you have, that age/sex/ethnicity are all irrelevent to the experience. But closer to the surface i fear that every day the scene around me keeps trying to prove me wrong.

I suppose the real question is, how do you know when you have crossed that line? I am sure it is a subtle blurring.

At what point does your art become irrelevant? Or, at what point does your personal image (or lack thereof) contribute to the decline of your arts ability to attract an audience.

I have always feared that if i did not have a full album and fulltime tour by this point in my own life that I would not have the proper building blocks to do this as my lifes work... but then, I make a very niche-market kind of music... I suppose if you are playing a broader spectrum of rock blues or jazz, then there really shouldnt be a problem...

OMG you're my age! There *IS* hope for me! :hihi:

Anyway, you're never too old to play music. You can be too old to sell to the teenieboppers that make up the vast majority of musical consumers, and like BONES (and I guess me now lol) you may not get on MTV or VH1.. but should that stop you from playing? HELL NO!

I play for myself, and some of my friends like my stuff so I burn CDs for them, and I've even had some of my stuff played at the local strip club by some of the dancers! :hihi:

It'd be nice to be famous or rich, but that's not going to happen for me and I'm OK with that. My day gig pays all my bills and keeps me in musical gear, so what's not to love?

Can you ever get too old to play? :?

No, but volume-wise what sells most (at least looking at the charts) seems to go to a younger demographic. I still buy about 2-3 CDs a month.. but it's definitely not pop! :-o

I'm sure there's the odd old geezer that buys Britney Spears CDs.. maybe. :P
