This is how I do it:

Route all of the vocals to a track called "vocal section"
Route all of the guitars, bass, drums, etc to their respective sections.

Drag each section down or up so you have all the volumes in one place

mix from there

(i think im going to attach each of those routed track sections to my tascam us428's faders... hmm!)

thats how i do it :)

How to make a nice cup of tea.

1. Boil water.

2. Warm mug.

3. Add Tea-bag and pour water.

4. Remove Teabag after suitable pause.

5. Add milk / sugar to taste.

6. Drink tea.

Tip forgetting stage 6 renders all previous stages pointless.

:D

It's not a bad plan. Each person will have their own personal approach to bussing, though. For example, I wouldn't be caught dead putting ALL the vocals to one bus. Definitely seperate lead and backing vocals for me.

Drums get bussed, but the bass stands alone. Rhythm guitars may or may not get submix depending on how much I layer them.

The next thing I do, which is a tip I picked up off somewhere here on KVR, is set the drums to -9db peak (more or less), then add bass using my ears only, and then start adding the rest, in whatever order I feel like working to be honest with you. Some people would say to add the rhythm guitars next, or whatever else, but as long as I have the bass and drums, the rest gets added pretty much whenever I feel like it.

I've found that the initial -9db drums is really helpful, because then I can get near the right levels going to the master channel without having to rely on a brickwall limiter as a "crutch". Then I can use the limiter the way it really SHOULD be used.

What? Lots of people don't bother to warm the mug first.. :P

Sorry Ron, only teasing you!

I often go further with subgrouping though, and create groups for kick & snare which then route to a further drums group.. sometimes this is then routed to a drum and bass group. It tends to be different for each edit though, and I swap things around a lot during mixing.. its one of the things I love most about Tracktion actually, that routings are so flexible and easily changed..

Well, my instructions were for a single cup made directly in the mug. If a pot is involved, you should be using tea leaves not bags.. :P

.. erm, subgroups: they really are great aren't they?

Post

about subgroups, this is how i do vocals, and guitars etc.

vocal lead > comp > mix volume up with bgv > route to track
bgv > comp > mix volume up with vocal> route to track

track controls the mixed vocal track's volumes
