Often times the reason they're so passionate about their hardware is because they can't stand to think that there is much cheaper software that can match or even outperform their hardware. They invested a lot of money into their hardware gear and hate to think that software could possibly sound as good or even better.

Some actually do... but you need to do some comparisons yourself to be able to comment that particular issueneverwhere2012 wrote:i believe he also tried to tell me at some point that TDM plugins also sounded far better than their native counterparts. it was pretty ridiculous.

I call it "Ego-Rectal anxiety", or the pathological fear of making an ass of yourself.benjamind wrote: This psychological phenomenon is known as "cognitive dissonance". Look it up if you don't believe me.
That's why people think Transcendental Meditation (i.e.) is so cool, because it's expensive. If they had been given a mantra for free, dismissing it wouldn't hurt as much in the wallet/dignity...
I really DO agree that building beats using loops is like plumbing or playing with Legos, while actually playing a drumkit is musicianship. Don't get all smug about your plugins either.

EXACTLY! and they just argue on as if that will make their hardware more worth it. I notice the same with users who use really expensive software that has freeware rivals.benjamind wrote:Often times the reason they're so passionate about their hardware is because they can't stand to think that there is much cheaper software that can match or even outperform their hardware. It is for this reason that I now give to each and every one of you your OWN SPECIAL MANTRA! It was made just for you, and you alone. Your mantra is this:Hovmod wrote:If they had been given a mantra for free, dismissing it wouldn't hurt as much in the wallet/dignity...
OON YELLIMON.

My only complaint with software is CPU useage, and that I have to keep upgrading my computer to get enough instances of the better-sounding VSTi. I can lean on the keyboard of my Fantom X and not have the CPU meter shoot up to 90% (like I can do with certain patches in Rhino, Kubik, or z3ta).
Software synths sound fine, the main issue I'm seeing is in sound-design for patches but that's slowly but surely improving thanks to our resident KVR sound designers.
Control could be an issue as was mentioned before, but with a nice control surface and some time spent mapping that's overcome.
Most hosts annoy the hell out of me, though! Just a pain in the ass to use without having to sit and stare at the manual.. something else I'd imagine a good control surface would fix.

You can't have that "feel" in your drum tracks using software (FLS, Orion, Battery, etc.) like you can with hardware (MPC 4000, ASR-X).mark77 wrote:There are a lot of passionate hardware freaks out there, nothing wrong with that. But some of their reasoning behind why, in their opinion music softeware is worse than their hardware is sometimes laughable. So let's hear some of the silly things you've heard these people say.
I have a friend that has hangups about filters. He adores his $2000 hardware sampler coz of its filters. but he's just the 'hardware sounds better' to hide behind the fact that he doesnt have any talent.
Or another person i know, who was complaining how V-Station doesnt has a good a bass sound as the Hardware K-Station. never mind that her heard them under different listening conditions, weeks apart, with different patches/settings.. yet they're so passionate about their arguments.
ok, over to you. If this topic is a little immature i apologise in advance.
Nevermind that happy FLS, Orion, Battery, or even Reason-users can make some badass beats in the matter of seconds!!!

nihilist, you are clearly not chanting OON YELLIMON, or your heart would be beating in harmony with the blossoming planetary chakra (with adjustable shuffle). At this rate you will not be receiving your genuine imitation saffron-colored robe until well past our customary 4-6 weeks for delivery. (It pleases me no end to announce that, like most robes, it is software.)

Software makes you fat(ter). No really, it does.
Compare the calories burned by moving the mouse around with having to move around the room to plug cables, twist knobs, remove the dust off your gear, take it for repair etc...
