Tracktion2 - small reflection

Okay - just spent £129 on Tracktion2. I was one of those who originally got it via the guitarplayer free offer so wasn't eligible for the free upgrade. Having said that, had I bought it and upgraded, it would have cost me around 80pounds. I guess it was inevitable that once Mackie bought it, it would be taken 'up market'.

I've yet to experience the volume changes that people are reporting - and indeed most of my experiences have been positive so far - the better documentation is good, as is the loop recording.

Having said that a couple of quibbles. It's worth going the upgrade route if possible - the new VSTs are mostly less than useful - especially RMIV which is tied to use in Tracktion only, and the associated woeful midi-editor. The new Mackie branded compressors *are* useful, but I believe they come in the downloadable bundle anyway. Also the GUI when more complex tends to be a *lot* slower - which suggests that Juce isn't scaling all that well and bodes ill for the future.

You mentioned the "woeful midi-editor." - ever so often I drop into the forum and ask 'why can't we have a full screen midi edit view via a key command?' - IMO most programs with Midi take a quantum leap foward when you can get a decent view (quickly) but unfortunately this FR (?) continues to get little support from users.

I love most of what T2 does but the current midi view(s) kill it for me, even Live now (IMO) has a superior midi view implementation.

I wonder if perhaps I am in a minority?

Well, I'm a guitarist originally - so everything I know about MIDI could be written on a postage stamp with a very thick pen .. mostly I'm programming in step time.

I have Tracktion and FruityLoops - and it appears to me that the pianoroll in Fruity is better in it's presentation of information and editability than Tracktion's Midi Editor - so I suspect someone who really made serious use of it would have even more issues.

My brother uses Tracktion with the piano, and mostly he's using his MC50 hardware sequencer to record, and then dumping things into Tracktion for final mix down.

I suspect that given the focus of most of Mackie's hardware MIDI Editing is very low down on their list of priorities - and understandably so from their perspective.

Its the one thing that stops me from using Tracktion all of the time. I too really would like a proper midi editing screen. And some support for channel aftertouch would be great too.

I'm not enough of a MIDI user to have a strong opinion either way. I admit, I'm not a huge fan of the method of note entry. I liked the old way.
