Problem - project manager

Can't stand the project management in Tracktion-
maybe I'm missing something here, but explicit pointers to disk locations of files bites crank.
When you move drives, or change computers, or just damn change directory setups, it means you've gotta go through that 'find orphan clip' for each and every audio track - it really sucks when you've got 20-upwards audio fragments...
Even logic audio 3.6 had a more amenable way of doing it-
it assumed that if the files in question weren't at the explicit pointer, they'd be in the root directory that the project file was in-
that meant you could just move the project to anywhere!
Further:
the project file direction bites crank-
if I make an edit template, then make several different copies for recording several different audio numbers, no matter where I put the new edits on disk it'll still store audio in the directory that the edit template was put in. Theres no way to change this.
Which means that either I have to go through the process of making each project file seperately rather than using a template (and copy-and-paste values between the apps), or record and then do the 'find orphaned clips' thing. Suck!
Also, why the hell can't I simply double-click on a project file and be able to open it straight away in tracktion? At the moment a project has to be imported into the main interface (or have been originally made on that computer and therefore already be included in that interface)-
I should be able to just open a tracktion project, regardless of whether or not it was originally made on that computer-
basically tracktion isn't designed for portability and sharing stuff between machines-
I am using tracktion 1.6??? by the way-
maybe 2 is more amenable-

er, tracktion is designed brilliantly for sharing stuff between machines.
export an archive of the edit you want to share, and that's a single file with everything in it. you open that file on the target computer, it expands it all into whichever directory you choose for it, and it's there and running (provided that computer has all the right plugins, of course, but it doesn't cripple you if it hasn't).
i think you're just trying the wrong things!

Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

While agree with your point that there is room for improvement, there are definitely a few inacuracies in your post. First off, check this sticky thread about how to best use templates:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=90728
Also, you can change the record path for inputs to not be in the project directory if you like. This is done by selecting the input arrow and making adjustments. Note that this has been improved some what for T2 by providing an option to apply changes to all inputs at once.
And I'm pretty sure double clicking will open a project. I'm not in front of my audio computer right now to double check.

yes unbeknownst to me, beno showed me the truth: exporting edits actually weeds out and splits out wav files etc, its amazing

No. Really? Wow - no, wait - you figured that out all by yourself??? Oh - wow - I'm so impressed - please give me your number so I can say 'NOT GIVING A DAMN'! Former protools, logic, etc etc etc etc anything etc user. So what? You're trying to tell me you never used a piece of software before tracktion???AD80 wrote:This guy has to be a former Logic user.
On a side note;
genuinely, thanks to beno for the advice-
the template creation & usage is less simple than being able to simply copy a file from one directory to another - but at least it works -
props.
I have to say though, that double-clicking a tracktion file will not work (well, with 1.6??? anywho) unless the project is already loaded into the tracktion prject manager first. So that much is true - you acn try it yourself.
Cheers everyone-
I think I've got the answers I need- I still think it's a crap design of doing things, somewhat unintuitive but oh well- NFR so not complaining-
well - not complaing Too much...

Hey, don't have a go at AD80, he just likes to pull people's legs a bit!
I don't think the project management is crap, it's just "horses for courses". As I said above, the export project and export edits and great for sharing as they completely remove any location dependancies on the constituent files.
Having said that, it would be nice for the directories to be relative rather than absolute so that directories can be moved without worry, but how often do you need to do that anyway?

He m@
I'll have a look at the opening thing. I don't think that should be happening. And I definitely do agree there is room for improvement and yur ideas will definitely help. Thanks,
Ben
