Anyway, I nominate anything along the lines that there's only a finite amount of music that is possible -- usually the implication being that the bulk of it has already been written. Often the phrase "there are only 12 (or 7) notes, after all..." is heard, which in itself is both ignorant & stupid.
A fine example was provided by a friend of mine in high school (who happened to be an aspiring shred guitarist) -- blah blah, only 12 notes, etc, leading up to:
"think about it -- I bet in 10 years, music will be extinct..."
to which he added, I guess to show that he'd thought this out,
"and then, records will be soooo valuable..."

BTW, wouldn't shred guitarists make the problem worse, speeding up the extinction of music by burning up the world's supply of notes faster? >:-( The heartless fiends!

Well, yeah... I wasn't so much questioning the validity of the assertion that mullets are "sacred" hairstyles amongst the Thai rock community as much as I was just highlighting the absurdity of such a concept... mullets = sacred?!?!

all his posts are in that other thread for the most part. the brilliant one about how to make trance so that he can "make time" (is it the 50's?) with a girl.

God, that guy is sooooooo cool. I hope I too can get manuals and then put plug-ins in the right place to get that FAT TRANCE SOUND! Jesus, that guy RULES!

The worst offense I've ever heard:

"I don't listen to music."

It's about as bad as people who say "I don't watch movies." or "I don't watch TV" or "I don't read books."

ha? why is that bad? I've started to watch TV again this year since i moved in with my girlfriend, but before that I seriously didn't watch TV for 2 years - I didn't even have one! (ok there was exception for a few weeks when EURO 2004 was on TV... )

I don't know - I just never found attraction of TV whenever I lived alone and had internet access. :p

Well, the type of people who say things like "I don't watch TV" or "I don't watch movies" do it with such an air snobbery that I just want to punch them. They always give the same ignorant "There's only crap on TV" or "All Hollywood movies are garbage" reasoning, as if the entire medium of television or cinema consists of only the mainstream. There are plenty of great foreign/indie films, and there are lots of great educational and meaningful TV shows.

The people who say "I don't read books" tend to be the shallow ones. I actually know someone who would buy books that "seemed deep" and put them on his bookshelf to give visitors the impression that he had depth, but in reality he admitted to me in private that he's never finished a single book in his life--and he'd never read anything for leisure.

The type of people who say "I don't listen to music" or "I don't really get into music much" tend to be complete stiff bores. How can you not like music? That's almost like saying "I don't like having a soul."

well, I think anything said with 'air of snobbery'sounds annoying anyway, whether it's "I don't like music" or "I like music".

Just for the record - the reason why I didn't watch TV before was because well... it just didn't interest me. What can I say...?

I don't know anyone who wouldn't say the same thing about music or movie or books or whatever - I mean surely there are things in this world and life that you don't find interesting either?

I guess your main point though is that you hate it when people say something with 'air of snobbery', not really anybody's dislike or lack of interest in anything...

Back in the mid 90's this stupid girl said "music has gone about as far as it can go, they've done everything". I said, "not really, there are instruments that haven't even been invented yet, most music you hear is still the same instruments that have been around since the 50's". This was before I was even into synths at all. I can honestly say, I was right.

Also, it's funny when people say "theory is BS, it just hinders creativity, I don't need to know that stuff." Now I'm pretty ignorant myself when it comes to theory, but I do know if anything, knowledge makes you more creative. You can learn more about music in a couple hours with a decent teacher than you can in a year noodling around by yourself.

What's the stupidest thing you've heard said about music?
