I agree. Some people treat thm like the plague, but I see no reason for an attitude that exclusive. Voxengo's Stereo Touch is a good friend, but it goes on one track, no more, and never in the m/b.

I like them because they can help to offset planes in the mix, kind of like foreground, middle, and background in a painting. You can do this with mixing, but it's nice to be able to apply the effect to only one instrument, which a good widener does well, if used carefully.

Have a (red glowing, perhaps ) mono check button in the bottom right corner (aka end of the chain).

Because when I play with such an effect I always want to check if it sounds good in mono as well.
I thought that maybe also a lot of people do like this.

Sure, I have a mono switch on my master track, but it's very FAR. That's the reason for this suggestion.

And also, I thought that this might not be very difficult to code. But I might also be very wrong on this one, since I don't know about programming.

And I understand if programmers don't want, for whatever reason, to have a mono button there, it's ok, just a suggestion... And I'll be applying some pressure to the host makers, as well, to make an easy accessible mono button on the master track. (What's up with Cubase? )

Let me know what you think about it.


p.s.1: What happened with Chunkware Orban? I think it's one of the best effects of this kind.

p.s.2: I haven't found yet a VST that applies different tone/eq/whatever to every channel. I mean something like Betabugs' Moneo, only with more/different controls to make the L and R channels a bit different -> wider.

Nobody seems to really answer your suggestion. But merely doing advertizing of tools which obviously don't have such a "mono button" and aren't even available yet.


Yes. I agree. Some stereo wideners are NOT mono compatible. That is a problem, of course. So I definately vote for a stereo compatibility check button and maybe a visual phase meter too!

Don't stop to ask! Finally they will implement it.
Otherwise those tools are merely quite uesless. Even some kind of "bugs", which I personally tend to remove from my disks after touching.

You want to check your WHOLE mix for mono compatibility.

Sure, I do so. But I'm talking about when I'm working on a specific channel with some "exotic" effect. Then it's a bit uncomfortable (depends on host) to go to the master channel pressing that mono button (If such a button exists in the first place).

And no, I never use a widening effect on a whole mix either.

AND, it has the "mono" button people have been talking about, too. Just press the bug character for Mono check.

Another thing that one could do for checking a whole mix is just insert a mono-making plug-in like... er... well, MonoMaker! Or PhaseBug (without any phase shifts, just using the mono button) or Moneo and select the "mono" preset.

Ron - It loads fine into my Tracktion. That's what I do all my testing in, so it's pretty rare that a plug-in could be released that's Tracktion-incompatible.

the Orban effect is lying dormant for the moment, but it will re-emerge later on, with a GUI and everything... and a new, trademark-unenfringing name.

the best thing I have tried is FL stereo enhancer. unfortunately it's not avaiable as vst and nothing comes close.

Stereo - mono warning. I just picked up this thread whilst looking for VST-AU compatibility with Logic 7.1 and Tiger. I thought I'd post a quick word of experience regarding stereo/mono. Forgive me if you know this already, but if you pan something in the centre of the stereo and check mono, the level is the same; if you pan something hard left or right and check mono, it will be 3 dB quieter... Trust me, I set up a boring mix patch to check this with 1K tone, and it is true. Extra-wide FX can make the drop even greater if they use anti-phase. I love big wide stereos, but always remember to check the mono. Make the balance sound right in (quiet) mono and it will almost certainly sound great when you go back to stereo.
