Scoring/simple sequencer for 10 year old children?

I'd recommend either Sibelius or Finale (in their various available versions), since they are the tools strongest in the notation and printing of sheet music area.

A normal sequencer (vst host etc.) I wouldn't recommend for them at this point. Once they know their notation software inside out and used it for a whole while they could check out something like project5 v2 (not having any notation at all) to familiarize themselves with the whole VSTi/pattern way of thinking, without getting it mixed up with the classic way of writing music.
I.e. better to not present them with the 'easy' way right away, not before they mastered sibelius or finale.
After that they'll feel at home in both worlds, and won't have any problems or steep learning curves when they want to use the big 'sequencers' like cubase/logic/sonar.

You've never tried to move from a softstudio like P5 or FL to a big sequencer like cubase, have you?
