Looks nice, but what a waste of screen space. Those EQ
s take up half the screen.

Yes, but there's probably other options i.e. small faders view or simply no EQ view like in SX/Nuendo.
And when using 2 (or more) monitors with a screensets function, that's not really a problem. At least not for me.

I really do appreciate the post. I was not aware of a couple of things.

Let me then re-define the question......

How useful is that to the home studio........or even pro studio unless you are a big time movie editor? I'm guessing that it won't run properly on a regular pc with those specs........

So (and again it's question not a put down) how does it compare to all these other products like sonar/protools (le/mpowered) live, etc??

Another vote for Live 5 - simple, efficient, functional. Very much SOFTWARE.

Failing that, I think the Samplitude one indeed looks very lush if you want something very full-on.

And I think the FL mixer deserves an honourable mention, again because it's very clear and simple ... and *almost* tempted me down the FL route a couple of years back when it was added (but again, it's not one I personally use).

I think that the Cubase and Sonar ones are both too complex looking. The Sonar one in particular seems to me to waste a lot of screen estate.

The first time I saw live.....it's like.....ok, this is a nice gimmik......but not for 400 bucks.

The second time was like.........no......not for 400 bucks.

The third time got my attention...........but no for 400 bucks......

Now, live 4 was close........really close but it just could not justify 400 bucks........plus protools came with a decent little lite 4 version......

But for 250 bucks........(upgrade lite) live 5 is

You can hide the mixer elements you don't need in Samplitude . Also Samp is skinable. Synthax have some new skins they are about to release as well including the Alloy Skin Suite :

Every single one of those fake console shots makes me sick to my stomach now that I'm using Tracktion. What a waste of time they are for a mouse-pusher like me. Unless you've got a control surface connected to your machine; where you can use your 4 fingers and 2 thumbs to shove sliders up and down, the console view is a true waste of programming and screen space.

Now if I had a control surface, that would be a different story. But without one, the fakey GUI-only versions are all just eye candy and really get in the way of getting things done with a mouse and automation curves as the main way to fade and fly effects and such.

Tracktion has it's warts but I fly about 3 times faster now with it; without all the clutter of the other 'faking hardware' hosts; fancy and as expensive as they may be.

So pHz, I'm with you; I'll take screenshot #2 from your post.
