Why do you think my post was targeted at you?
It's my global pov.
Anyway, dongles are not that bad you know because you can easily use the software legaly on different machines. Every protection scheme has its pros & cons and none is perfect, I'm affraid.

Really. So what exactly is the con of having a serial number?

i'll spare you the huge banner.

as opposed to any protection.
if you want this to be more specific i'd say a as opposed to a protection that is not breakable with a reasonable amount of work (before you ask: reasonable meaning the work somehow being related to the gain the persons cracking have of this. not the freeloaders).
so, how does a serial number protect software?

Same as with a dongle - you can forget to take your number with you. If you don't have a record of your serial No. when you load up elsewhere, your s/w is as useless as if you forgot to take your Cubase dongle.Really. So what exactly is the con of having a serial number?
Not that I don't prefer serial No.s over dongles, but I personally don't see dongles as any less convenient than a serial.

Installing elsewhere usually requires you to purchase another copy.your s/w is as useless as if you forgot to take your Cubase dongle.
thats a stretch if i've ever seen one. a serial number must be used once, and sometimes when you update.
that is surely not the case with a dongle.
edit: besides - didn't you buy the software for a reason... ?
i'll spare you the huge banner.

I didn't think it was targeted at me. I'm merely pointing out that stating your "global pov" ("they have no clue what they're saying...pathetic") in a thread where a guy, through no fault of his own, has not had the use of his dongles for 2 weeks --
-- is pretty damn thoughtless to say the least.

Hey CC4,
This is a major drag. Makes it even clearer to me that I will never buy any software that uses a dongle no matter how great it is. There is no danger I wil ever get Cubase though. I am denying myself Reaktor though and that is a real downer.
Given the fact that this manner of protection does not prevent piracy makes it even more annoying and ironic.
Good luck,
Gordon

I don't mind the dongle at all. Never had any problems with it.
Activation is another story. Nothing but grief and constant problems.
I will upgrade constantly, cpu, motherborad, hard drives... everything.
There have been times where I have had to request activation codes 3 times in one month. FFS I paid for it. Why should I need to justify why I need a new activation code for in the first place.
To me this concept is seriously flawed. It would be just like purchasing a car from a dealership but everytime you move or everytime you put a different type of fuel / oil in the car, change a lightbulb, (gawd I could go on and on), anyways the end result is you need to call the dealership and ask permission to resume operation / driving of the vehicle again.
A dongle to me is inobtrusive. Just plug it in and go.

To be fair, you are talking about NI products, not Cubase, right? There's no activation in Cubase, install the app as many times as you want, use it one-at-a-time with your Dongle.MySTiK wrote:I don't mind the dongle at all. Never had any problems with it.

I wasn't targeting NI specifically but product activation in general.
I'll get bashed for this I'm sure but I totally support Steinberg's dongle initiative.
I was just throwing in my half cent biased opinion.
Maybe me and me m8s are lucky but I haven't known anyone on a personal level ever suffer dongle problems. Just seems kinda weird to me that there are so many dongle bashers out there.

yeah i have a cubase dongle hanging off a usb hub (don't want to risk breaking it if i mindlessly tilt my laptop without unplugging it) and i've never had a problem at all.
Just wanted to clairfy, your post kinda read like Cubase requires activation and reactivation, which is doesn't. I just don't want to give the anti-cubase camp more BS to feed each other with.
cheers

I attached a USB cable to my Cubase SX dongle and put it in one of those little plastic probiotic yogurt bottles, with the USB cable poking through
a hole in the top
My dongle is bigger now , not so easy to loose , less fragile and any ware and tear is on the replaceable USB cable

Yep.
When the dongle is dedicated to a single desktop machine, an even more secure way is to plug it directly to an internal USB port (on the motherboard, inside the tower/rack). So the cat/dog/child/giraffe/... can't eat/brake it.
