mini BR - piano roll, changing selected notes lengths

When I select a bunch of notes with the lasso and then click the 'len' button and choose a value of less than '1 beat' often as not nothing happens.

I can get the notes to change length if I select '1 beat' from the pop up list, and then I can choose any other note size after that.

[The midi clips are created by recording the input from an external controller and typicaly are all very short to start with]
