I would be happy if I had access to FL 50.02 as well, Im slumming it with version 5.

I would love to recomend Tracktion. the two really would make a fantastic pair. very unfortunately, my experiances with Tracktion and Fl (runnig as a VSTi/Rewire slave) have been very negative. Next bet would be Steinberg.

twister, you said you would keep using FL unless you use a hardware synth. well, that's my case. I've been using FL as my sequencer for 2 years and now I've bought a hardware synth. I am considering buying Sonar and use FL within sonar as a plugin. would you recommend me? what advantages would I get from Sonar regarding hardware synth? thx

I'm a very, VERY happy user of FL5. I've used it for professional sound design work, two full-length original albums, and professional work scoring for games, TV, radio, and theatre.

"It's not the tools, it's what you do with them." or something like that, right? If you like FL, stick with it!

And what is it about having hardware synths that makes FLS unusable? Two things I can think of:

Only a single MIDI input device, annoying since my system has 8 MIDI IOs

No support for SYSEX, which really surprised me. I realized this recently, and had thought I was just doing something wrong. What kind of sequencer doesn't let you work with sysex?

Post

james, what do you use then for hardware synths? which host?

Probably why they call the big boys "sequencers" and the new kids "virtual studios".

Gingo, are you gonna tell us why you feel the need to move on? A little more info might allow someone to give you the advice you are looking for. Without any clarification I would have to say that there is nothing you can't accomplish with Fruity and if you're used to the workflow it will probably be a long time befroe you are able to use any other host as efficiently and fully. If you feel it is lacking in certain areas you may be able to fill in the gaps with something like EnergyXT or a good audio editor like Audition. I certainly don't believe that you will make better or more professional music just because you pay through the nose for expensive software.

Octamed?

The ones that you're on about Gingo are much more expensive than FLS, so sticking with that and getting some more plugins is probably a good bet, IMHO. You dont have to pay out loads in one go, but can build up some excellent effects and synths!

I quit FLstudio about half a year ago, mostly cause I started to seriously despise pattern based composition. I got EnergyXT and it has made a world of difference. You can work any way you want to with it, seriously. You wanna stick to step sequencing? Stick step beater or stepchild as a midifx into any midi channel and sequence away, then drag and drop the pattern into the piano roll. there is so many ways to accomode any style of workflow...just a matter of setting it up and saving it as your default file. The best 50 bucks ever spent, trust me!

I've done linear composition in FLS. IMHO it's not the best tool for the job, but it's capable.

I can't recommend you anything outside of FLS :D My experience with different sequencers was either watching others use it, very briefly demoing some, or reading CM magazine articles. Lack of SYSEX support was the biggest pain in the arse back when I had my Virus B synth. There are tons of people on this forum that can give you a better advice about sequencers. I'm happy with my FLS and looking forward to v6!!! Since I got used to its pattern workflow, nothing else makes sense to me now. And this is good, since I can concentrate more on music writing instead of host hunting and then starting from scratch to learn all the ins and outs of it.

BTW, I don't consider myself a pro, but I have over a dozen of tracks licensed to record labels, and had my remixes released on a couple of maxi singles and a few tracks released on compilations - everything was done in FLS, except mastering done by record companies
