Hi,

I just got Kontakt 2.

Whats the proper way to use it? I was thinking set it up as a rack filter then you could use the one kontakt instance and accept different midi channels to each instrument in that. I know you can set midi snippets per track to their own channel, but as i set each track input to my keyboard, the keyboard is set to its own chanel. Is there a way to set the track itself to a specific chanel so i don't have to change the keyboard setting every time? Or is this the correct approach?

thanks

steve

hi

no you cant set the midi channel per track!

no need to wrapp it in a rack for sending another track's midi to it!! just send that track to the track with kontakt on ;)

i would wrapp K2 so you could use more than one stereo output from kontakt!

good luck

You can set MIDI channel per clip, or per input device.

So, although I don't have a keyboard anymore to test it, I would imagine that all you have to do is change the MIDI channel of your device from within Tracktion in order to play the different instruments you have set up. Even if your physical keyboard only outputs, for example, channel 2, I think the Tracktion setting allows you to change this. If not, you'll need to look into a MIDI tool like MIDI Ox.

Once you've got that sorted, if you want all the multiple-part recording to happen in the same track, make sure you've also selected the appropriate kind of MIDI behaviour, or you'll risk overwriting previous performances-- with the MIDI device selected, you'll see an option in the context box, in which you'll need to change it to "overlay new clips containing newly-recorded MIDI"

The main thing i'd like to do is just avoid having to change settings on my input device every time i switch tracks. Before kontakt, i just had a kompakt instrument per track so it was just easy.

Hopefully i can get it easy like that again. I'll look at midi ox and see if that helps.

thanks

Hrm. Well, it can be done with 2 methods that I'm aware of:

1. Put a separate instance of Kontakt in each track. :D

2. Use a combination of MIDI Ox and MIDI YOKE to make a set of virtual MIDI devices. They'll each send on "all" MIDI channels to start, but then you can pare them down to one each. Use Kontakt in a rack and you're off to the races.

For #2 I don't want to give detailed instructions without trying it myself first, but it should be possible in theory.

To be completely honest with you, though, I think it IS really easy to just do it exactly as you've describe how you want to avoid doing it:

1. Wrap Kontakt in a rack and set it up so that each instrument is associated with a different MIDI input channel (can you do that? I assume so!)

2. Put it on however many tracks you want. Let's assume you have 10 tracks with Kontakt. Now, even though theoretically you could switch instruments, name your track after the intended MIDI channel and instrument. (ie. call your track, "2 - Trumpet")

3. When you switch to the Trumpet track to work on it, you can see by the track name that it wants MIDI channel 2 if it's Trumpets you're working on. Switch your device to be channel 2.

It sounds like a bit of extra work, but I just quickly mocked it up and tried it out and it's literally 2 seconds of work to change the channel as you change tracks. That's less of a headache than trying to set up MIDI Ox and MIDI Yoke, trust me.

wait!!!!!

is there not a midi plugin that he can put at the end of each track that feeds into Kontakt that will let him rewire the midi from ch#1 to ch#2 or 3 or ect ect

there must be a free vst that can do that?

All you have to do is change the channel inside T for the input device on each track to the channel of the instrument inside Kontakt, which is inside the rack. I do it all the time. No need to set up yoke or ox, and no need to change the keyboard's settings.

Just do it with the input device icon for whatever track you are recording.

NiallM's Midi Channelizer - get it from the link in the essential utilities for Tracktion Sticky at the top of the page then use it like wot subz says :)

Can someone post a preset for those like me who keep messing this up. I have tried several times and get lost every time trying to figure out how to set up KOntakt multiple inputs and outs.

Yes, which is what I already described as being the easiest solution, but which he said in his first post that he wanted to avoid doing.

Gordon: What kind of preset? I don't think you could do a preset per se, but someone could probably do a tutorial of some sort with video and/or pictures.
