Large Archive Fails with FAT32 and no error message.

Archiving a large project it looks like I got hit with a 2Gig file limit on a FAT32 disk. Problem is the archiver did not report a failure when creating the file. I only found out when trying to unpack the archive. Looking at the file revealed it at exactly 2Gig. Two questions:

1. Does this sound like the correct diagnosis?
2. Can I safely convert to NTFS with T2? I run an ONYX 1620 w/ Firewire, Windows XP SP1, T2.
Thanks

The file size limit for FAT16 and FAT32 partitions is 4GB, so your problem is probably something else.

split in half
export edit, not project.

Probably limitation with your Archiving program. Split into multiple archive files.

XP has tool to convert FAT to NTFS. Used only once, worked fine then. Of course backupping is recommended. It's one way conversion.

upgrading my OS drive to ntfs caused no problems atall!

DISCLAMER!!!!! but there is a real posibility you could loose all data on that drive!

but it hardly ever happens,

BACKUP first!

Just to clarify, I was using the T2 project export function to archive the project. It was set to 2:1 lossless compression. What I found odd was that the archive file was exactly 2gig and that it would not unpack. Also I do not think exporting the edit would be much smaller since all the audio was used and I have several edits in the project that I wish to keep.

So I tried again with the same result. The archive size is exactly 2Gig and it will not unpack into a new project. If the real file size limit is 4Gig then this must a problem with the T2 archiver. Anyone ever create a T2 archive bigger than 2Gig?

out of interest, try using one of the lossy ogg compression options.. see if the smaller file size makes a difference.

Tried with the 16:1 compression and everything worked OK. Files upacked into a test project fine.

ok, now try exporting just an edit with the lossless option..

A single eit worked OK. The archive file was only 1 Gig. This leads to another question, is the archiver duplicating the audio for each edit??? That would not be a very efficient implementation if so. This edit uses all the audio in the project so it is hard to believe that when archiving the whole project it would be any bigger than this. Also I do need to save my other edits.

does the project contain audio not used in the edit?

I've never noticed the project export doubling up on data, but it may be more likely to include material that you are not using in a given edit (especially if the "include library files" option is checked).

Also, remember that the edit archive will trim included material according to the "keep handle size" option, whereas project archives will not trim audio.

I see now that the archive is trying to include all the final mix stereo audio export files too. of which there are close 13 for a total of over 1 Gig. The total project directory is over 3 Gig of stuff.

Bottom line, Can the T2 archiver create an archive file larger than 2 Gig or does it have a bug?

I just created a tracktion archive that is 2.1 GB using no compression and it unpacked fine. I'll record more and try it again with lossless.
