What do you do? I usually have projects that are a mixture of audio and midi tracks feedings VSTis and effects, usually with a comp like VW in the final slot. In order to move to the final wave, would you simply export the whole thing at one go, in that form - or are there technical reasons for rendering each midi track beforehand? Views appreciated.

I have occasionally had use for submixes...but until and unless you see a reason for it, there isn't any.
If you ultimately want to mix or master somewhere where they have a synth or sound module you want to use, then export midi tracks. But changing an instrument sound would more commonly happen before a mix, since a change in any instruments' timbre can effect the balance of everything else.
The most common use of having any sperate tracks intact during mastering is a separate vocal track for a "radio" master...
