HI
When i get 'Time' I pick up one of several THEORY type musical books I have and learn a new scale or something - for me thats great as I am not in any way proficient at playing a keyboard anyway.
I suppose if your proficient in an instrument that's not much help.
Flipper.

My wife is in grad school with a guy whos partner teaches music theory. We were talking to him one time, and I asked him about dry spells and what does he do about them. Basically, his take on them was that if you arent growing in your ability then you are going to hit a wall. There is only so many times you can play the same 3 chords before you get bored. He said that if you try to continuously improve your technique then you will more easily find inspiration for the next song. Another thing to try is to pick up and learn a new instrument. it will be slow going at first, but as you grow on a new instrument you find new inspiration, or you can at least play the same three chords on a new instrument and get a different sound. Its probably the best advice I have been given, as it prompted me to really start hammering on theory and learning guitar better.

Or just buy some new computer games and ignore life for a while
But seriously, another thing good for it is to actually go on sabatical from music and sink into other cultural/artistic experiences: go to art and history museums, go to dance or theater performances, read some good literature. Getting involved in other creative endeavours, even if it's only as an observer has always been a great inspiration to me. If you listen to my Until The Isban Moon (follow link in my sig), you'll hear an abstract aesthetic that was a direct result of seeing one exhibition of Suprematist artwork at the National Gallery in Washington DC. It was a huge retrospective on Kasmir Malevich and it completely lit my mind of fire with inspiration after an extended and very disappointing dry spell.
Or, as Ringo does in Hard Days Night . . . just go out parading!

this subject comes up so often it should be a sticky...cypher, my friend...you ever have a tough time falling asleep? Then you start thinking if I sleep now I'll get x hours sleep...then you still can't sleep and you get frustrated, still no sleep comes and you work yourself up so sleep is impossible...I know you know what I mean, I haven't met the person that didn't.
No I didn't get a touch of Rurik in me
, but the truth is that's what you're doing.
What can you do about it?
Nothing
What should you do?
Anything
Will it come back?
no, it never went away
Life is full of cycles my friend, like that of the wave we work so hard to create...sometimes it's up, sometimes it's not, the trick is all in the timing and recognizing where you are, forcing where you are is a waste of time.
Dont fret it, dont purge, dont assume the worse...instead embrace the time in your cycle for other things, you'll be surprised how quick it resurfaces (like I say it didn't go away)...it's natural, it's not unique to you, it usually is a stage of growth (and a good waypoint) it is a learning experience and you eventually benefit....it's good not bad...it's positive not negative...

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I hit a wall myself.
Of course, if it wasn't for this I may never have realised that I like pain.
My partner is a complete song machine. In 10 minutes a complete piece is born on the piano with a sophisticated accompaniment and a melody as well.
Makes me feel a little inadequate actually.
And comments like: "It doesn't really matter if I forget them, I just create another one" doesn't really help - especially when the statement is a fact and not a boast.
But I'm focussing on a few other things lately that are music-related but not actually composing.
In this way - I don't totally lose touch with what it was all about for me in the first place.....I hope.

Me too, pretty much. No enthusiasm, much frustration and a lot of head/wall banging.CypherOne wrote:I'm in the middle of the biggest dry spell creatively that I've ever had.
Having listened to your music since day dot, I gots to disagree with this one.CypherOne wrote:I realise that my writing hasn't improved over the last two years, I don't feel I'm learning anything and I'm not even enjoying the struggle to write anything of worth.
You've come on in leaps and bounds and have even developed a distinct sound - which actually isn't a bad thing when listening to a CD.
Listen to my stuff. No particular direction, everything I do is a different style - and always a sub-standard version of that style. It means if I ever dared to put out a CD, it'd flow really badly. Whereas the one I've got from you flows very well indeed. You and Kriminal are my two favourite dance-oriented artistes on this board (sorry everybody else, no accounting for taste eh?
Wanna collab?CypherOne wrote:I kinda can't be arsed anymore.
