Hearing is much more accurate than vision anyway. (eg: look at two spinning wheels. Can you tell if one is going exactly twice the speed of another? Now play two notes an octave apart.. are they in tune? Wink)
Great point..I got blasted for saying this in another thread.
You got blasted for being a twat. Sorry, just the truth. You were acting like Ron *only* wanted to use his eyes which was totally inaccurate. Ron had a good idea and you just couldn't let it be without trying to destroy it.

My idea admittedly is more so my bad hearing can be aided a bit and IIRS is correct that it wouldn't give incredibly useful feedback, and I mostly like it because it's something nifty that T alone could implement. But Ron's idea was actually pretty solid and didn't warrant your repeated attacks.
Yeah that's a real fair assesment  . I posted the same basic thing that IIRS is saying now, and got ripped for it. I then defended myself from idiots like you calling me a "twat" when there was no real comeback.

The whole point is nothing substitutes using your ears. People can say that is "elitist" or whatever, but it is simply just the truth.

Look, this whole thing is going get all heated again..I already have a deadhead calling me a twat. So in the interest of civility.

Use whatever the hell you want. If you think graphics will help you mix..great..enjoy it. I will stick to the VU meters and check out my spectrum when I master. I believe in training your ears your whole life and keeping your eyes out of the listening equation. I don't see why using graphics to find frequencies is a good idea at all, but some do..more power to them.

Spectrum analyzers give more than just one octave of visual feedback, right? It depends on how many bands are displayed and the resolution that is measured, right? I don't really think you're analogy is really applicable here.

Anyway, I don't think it's as simple as just 'use your ears' in all situations. I'm admittedly not a pro and this is just my opinion, but I don't believe I'm wrong about this.

when i paint or sculpt i use primarily my eyes ... but i also use my ears and sense of touch to give me feedback about my materials and the way theyre behaving ...

... why LIMIT yourself to just one sense when you mix ???

but like has been said ... use what hell YOU like as long as it works for YOU ...

which other senses come into play when someone listens to your mix?

which other senses come into play when someone LOOKS at my paintings ???

Probably none.. but I wouldn't presume to tell you how to paint! :hihi:

However, if you told me you made a choice of a particular colour because of the way the paint tasted, i would regard you as a bit of a nutter.. :P

Post

So, where can we hear these paintings of yours, rob?

yeah ... synaesthesia is an interesting condition isnt it ???

(but serious point ... i might well make a decision about materials to use based on the way they physically felt in the context of a given work (even when talking about paint rather than sculptural materials) over and above their visual impact ... but then philosophically ive always been more interested in process than outcomne)
