Filterscape
may not sound the absolute best, but it's very, very good and really flexible and complex, but with a very simple and intuitive interface and surprisingly low cpu usage.

I like QuadFrohmage the best of the dedicated filters, mostly because of what it can do overall to sound and not just its filtering capabilities, which are also high quality (meaning there are four filters, each with its own delay, has great distortion stages, lots of flexible modulation, etc).reprznt wrote:what is the best filter effect vst? fabfilter volcano? antares filter? nitro? hopefully there is a freeware filter that sounds great.... frohmage i heard is good

I love the Reaktor filters more than any others. They sound very cold and hollow.

Go to www.wwaym.com and try their filter. It is cheap and it sounds nearly real to my ears.
Here is my small version:

my vote goes for fabfilter volcano. Superb sounding filters. Can be really raw or ultra smooth (controlled from the input gain). They have a certain organic quality that I've yet to find in other VST filter plugins.

I'll plug the FabFilter Volcano as well. Sweet, buttery smooth and mellow right through to harshness, I run all kinds of stuff through it these days. Does some great eq tricks as well. Can't wait to see their follow-up synth!

emulator x - 50 odd differnt filters many of which are suitably exotic but all sound good - i just wish they would ahve it as as seperate vst fx - i would buy fabfilter volcano too if i could afford it !
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

I have an Emu6400 and have been looking for something to substitute the filters in software for a while, the nearest I got was Quadfrohmage and Albino.
I recently got Camelphat 3, much better than Quadfrohmage (hi pass) imo but I wouldn't say it is better or worse than the Emu, just different. Definitely worth checking out, its only £45 too.
Out of the other software filters Fabfilter Volvano just sounds distorted to me I don't like it at all, I have also tried Antares Filter, Nitro, Filtrator/Filtroid and to me the ones I stated above are the best available.
I have heard a few people going mad over a softsampler called Shortcircuit it is supposed to have great filters and pitch interpolation but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.
From what I have heard it is one of the best quality softsamplers available, much better than Kontakt.
There is free version available exactly the same as the full version but limited to 2 note polyphony. I am going to try it out when I get some time.
