_starcraft_ did say the filters sounded good, but that isn't the issue.

The problem lies in its application. If you wanted to have the filter in place on a master bus, and only want to do a lowpass sweep 5 minutes in to your set or track, it's a problem if the clean signal is affected, and in this case not affected in a useful manner (ie muddying of sound, maybe it's phasing part of the frequency band?) and not affected in a manner consistent with the performance of the effect.

An example: BetaBugs Crayonfilter affects the sound when wide open, but it does so purposefully, as it is intended to be a heavily driven filter out of the gate. You would only use it for colouring the sound (ha, first time I got that colour/crayon association), but the colouring is in keeping with the full effect of the filter (meaning it's meant to colour even at extreme settings, understandable that it might at initial settings, too, since you wouldn't use it for clean sounds).

I suspect Volcano was not intended to muddy the signal in any way.

But this thread was supposed to be about personal tastes (what is the best filter you have heard), so enough with this good/bad business the lot of you.

Exactly. And it IS NOT affecting the signal much if you lower the input gain. These two are just looking for trouble.

and dude lowering the input volume solves nothing.
can't u see the input gain is set to 0 !! so it should not be affecting sound!
Your logic keeps failing you. Just because the input gain is 0 doesn't mean it's not driven hard internally. Heck, have you ever used any microphone pre-amps? Ever noticed that the input gain knobs are sometimes labelled 0 in the middle and goes from -20dB or more to +60dB? Why do you think that is?
_starcraft_ wrote: if there's no cutting or boosting of frequencies u can't justfy such a drastic drop in volumes, sound dynamics and harmoinc content. u should be able to have the same sound coming in and out of a filter.(by just adjusting cut off and resonance).
but in this plugin u lose quality....the sound gets raped . not more to add.
Why does this nice filter with a very distinct quality and behavior have to suddenly be made 'vanilla'? I personally happen to like it's sound and quirks.
_starcraft_ wrote: ps: if u do own this plugin then contact the devlopers and get them to fix it for you. don't attack us for just pointing out what this plugin does to the audio chain.
It is NOT borken. Your first post was full of misinformation and I only pointed that out. Btw. I'm not attacking you but the way you behave one can't be without suspecting you're either an angry teenager or a troll. I also do not want your mis-information hinder somebody from trying the demo.
_starcraft_ wrote: i think they nailed the sound of the filters but screwed up somwehre else....making this plugin a joke...or at least not suitable for its purpose.
I'm currently mixing a commercial project that is doing just fine and it has volcano all over the place.

Just to keep you all a bit amused I'll post some audio tracks (full mix volume/density) that run trough volcano and some that do not. Let's see if you can pick out the one that is 'supposedly' broken.

Who me? I look for no trouble. And you've said yourself you've heard the change to the signal that _starcraft_ mentioned, even suggesting ways to work around it.

Enough with the fanboy fightspeak already. You like Volcano, good, happy. But that doesn't mean it is the most perfect thing ever and that it is without flaw.

Let's all stick our heads our bums, it makes for an excellent filter, too.

Ok, here are 44,1kHz 16bit wave files of an intro to a full mix. It impacts the volcano filter plugin rather loud. It's using the 'clean' preset but slightly tweaked: 1 filter is turned off, it's put into series mode (too keep volume unaffected) and input gain is turned to -20 and output gain to +20.

So, which one of these files has volcano on it?

File 1

or

File 2

.. rather subtle difference, no? There IS a difference in these two files but I wouldn't call volcano broken and bad based on this little difference. And like I've mentioned earlier, one can always bypass the filter completely with the wet/dry knob incase you really want to keep the mix clean before treating it to filtering.

No no no.. not you! :) starcraft and 000 I meant. Btw. I'm not trying to furiously defend volcano. It DOES introduce colouring but calling it flawed and broken is simply untrue and I just wanted to correct that.

Fair enough.

Maybe it will show up in synths later this year.
It is very promising. Amazing little CPU-load too.
Now this IS excellent news indeed. Thanks for the heads up! :)

I never noticed Volcano affecting my sound - maybe one of you who can hear the difference can mail the guys at fabfilter and see what they say? I'm sure they will do what they can to make sure their product is working properly.

I never noticed because I usually use it on drums, and I have them filtering constantly, not worrying about them running clean at certain times.

64bit is no problem, at least the FPU calculates internally with 64Bits, since years!
Anyway for typical filters you will definatly hear ugly filter ringing, when using less then 32Bit. I think 32Bit is still enough anyway.
posihfopit works internally with 64Bit too, but there is a hidden 'cheap' filter, which is truncated to 12bit, so that you can hear the ringing very good. Creates nice effects, but is nearly uncontrollable.
Maybe someone will find that undocumented feature...

Christian

P.S.: You can also overlay several EQ bands to create your own custom filter. By marking more than one filter you can select and move this complex structure as one, although the plug is definatly more an EQ, than a filter.

fhhhppppp fhpppppp plbbb plllbb! Whats that sound ,is it a dog with a hair lip or is it just his arse is the wrong way round? No..... its just Volcano with its farting filter!

I did mail them about this but their answer was quite logical, just turn down the input gain (which seems to be extremely hard for some people to understand).

.. which reminds me? Which one of the files that I posted earlier has fabfilter volcano on it? Anybody dare take the challenge? After all, according to certain people it should be very obvious as it affects the signal a lot and hence is totally useless.. :hihi:

I guess you would also jump out of the window, if the guys from FabFilter say to you that it would make their filter sound better... :hihi:

I am very sure: That's all exactly analog modeled and behaves like some of the originals inside Volcano ...

And bManic:
We simply have our opinions (, experiences and demands to quality) and you have yours.
What's actually the problem with that?

the dynamics , volume and presence get killed in that plugin.
just open the "clean" preset and hear how its not clean at all. compare by bypassing the plugin.
the sound of the filters is actually good....but the plugin somewhere in the audio chain does something starnge to the incoming audio....
u cant get the same sound comin in and out ofthe plugin....it just lowers the quality of the audio coming in. it's so evident.
ppl that said this is a good filter plugin need their ears checked.no offence....but its so obvious.
what i really liked though was the MIDI tiggering (for lfos and enevlope)on keypress. which make its seemlessly integrate with any softwsynth for example.
Hi hii hi :hihi:
I was put to pieces by making "my review" of that crap shortly after release. Now I am justified (and satisfied). We are brothers in mind.

I mean, nobody with a little bit of ear-to-brain connection could ever ignore all those problems with Volcano. It is a (bad) distorter or lofier in my opinion. Nothing else.

.
Well, if Volcano is crap and such a distorter or lofier, why don't you try to find which of the two samples has Volcano and which one does not? :D

Post

Sorry. But I use a filter usually for filtering, and not when needing clean sound. So that "clean theorem" is not initiated by me. And I have really no motivation to play a guessing game here...

...where the initiator probably not even did the test right or used something different or tweaked it nicely or whatsoever...

I did test this piece of software for my own already(the samples and that review are still floating arround here anywhere...) and found it really astonishing strange behaving and wondered, why people could not hear any problems. That's all.

Yes, it distorted the sound badly with some (most) algorithms, even if you reduced the input volume.

But I was "put to pieces" for my opinion (and the proove by the way), because I am a "developer". and a developer has to have no opinion obout other products and has not to do such proves. That is a rule here at KVR. But not my rule.

All products have to be merely praised here at KVR. Criticism (which maybe could help to improve the software) is not really wanted here (because that's mainly a "marketing place". And exactly not from somebody, who has some knowledgement in that area.

By the way, my "review" was at a time, when some people tried to initiate the "ultimate filter hype" with Volcano and some others - based on pure superstition and euphoric misleading.

In the meantime the crap has already separated from the quality in the filter area. That's always so and good.

I think, Volcano ranges now anywhere in the midrange or below for some certain reasons...
