Well, you said Volcano is "crap". You agree with _starcraft_ that Volcano has a lot of problems, one of them not being clean at all....yet you don't dare to differentiate between the samples that bmanic provided.

Did you not understand, what I said?
And what proove the samples from bmanic, please?
That this filter is actually able to "bypass" the signal in exquisite manner?
That's ridiculous.
Again: I do NOT make the quality of that filter dependant from it's ability to "bypass" the signal if the filter is totally "open". I did make it's quality dependant from his filtering results generally, which sounded completely crap to me.
So what?

What about Antares Filter it has some very interseting presets in it. But the filters built in are not very convincing. But as an overall solution I like it.
Summary: Antares Filter is a good one (IMHO of course) because Presets very good and usable.

I'm curious, what truly makes one filter sound so much better than another filter?

There are some quality indicators but 90% its personal taste I guess. What makes a song sound better than another? What makes a color look better than another?keyboardmatt wrote:I'm curious, what truly makes one filter sound so much better than another filter?

I found the ultimate answer:keyboardmatt wrote:I'm curious, what truly makes one filter sound so much better than another filter?

Drinking coffe is all about coffee filters. It doesn't matter what coffee (audio input) or coffee machine (host) you use!shamann wrote:True, true. Some coffee filters make my coffee muddy in much the same way.Galleoneer wrote:Exactly the same thing that makes a coffe filter better than another one
Thats a well know fact among insiders, yes, sir, a fact.

Is the D Pole filter in Waldorf Edition good? I have it but haven't installed it as of yet. Computer is very buggy lately....
There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres. Pythagoras

Emu filters aren't tipical analog emulations. They can change sound quite drasticaly or give it another character. They also sound equally good on realistic instruments and synhetic sounds. Zplane can make grand piano sound like analog synth or strings like synthetic pads very easily. It's not just the cuting and boosting frequencies with resonance.

I agree, which is WHY I posted these examples coz a certain person said that fabfilter can NOT do this. I also thought that this claim is ridiculous. Glad you agree with me this time.000 wrote:Did you not understand, what I said?

If I recall the eariler 'debate' you had a pretty damn hard time accepting the fact that this is all just opinions.000 wrote: Again: I do NOT make the quality of that filter dependant from it's ability to "bypass" the signal if the filter is totally "open". Anyways, the initial "it totally distorts everything" initiator should check the samples, I'm still waiting for an answer.

Oh yeah,
a filter discussion!
bmaniac: I like A more than B so I'd say it sounds better.
A sounds phatter to me so this might be the slight distortion introduced by Volcano?
That said, I'm not a fan of Volcano from my own test. I made a comparisson with some filters and my favourite filter after that test is: Vampire.
But hey, as someone said already: It's 90% taste. And this is mine.
To add to the general discussion: To me a synth or FX has to "feel" right when -I- use it. I had it often that other people were able to get good sounding results from some gear that didn't sound good and/or didn't feel right to me when I tried/used it. This is a big factor for lot of people I think.
Best wishes, FRitz
