OK - that's weird. I have a Yamaha P80 and I wasn't aware of such an idiosyncrasy.

I'll try it again when I get home tonight.

I've loved a few piano sample sets in my time including the native Yamaha P80 sound and "The One", but I felt really at home with the Steinway. I'm not sure why - on a "size counts" front, it's under 100MB in size - quite a bit smaller than "The One".

However, I kind of felt like I was sitting at a real piano.

Maybe it was just better than I'm used to hearing stuffing around with much smaller samplesets and I got a bit of a culture shock. It's also been a while since I played with "The One".

I'm focusing almost stupidly on one instrument when there's a million to look at, but I'm a piano player and I just love it when a piano like this makes me feel comfortable - not just something to render with, but something to play.

I'll try and drag myself off the Steinway to another instrument if possible. The Cello is my favourite instrument so I might have a look at all the Solo Cello patches.

God - this could take years. :D

The book is pretty nice. It outlines all the components pretty well I think.

I'm trying to work out the best way to achieve a legato of a solo cello (for example).

I'm guessing this would be done by using the mono legato mode with a very small glissando and then very slightly overlapping the notes in the sequencer. Have I got that right?

Is this also where I should STRETCH? It sounds like it might be a good idea because if I understand the concept rightly, a mono legato will actually pitch bend the sample up or down so that if my legato note goes over a couple of semitones you might get a really unpleasant and totally unrealistic sound. Whereas if I use mono legato with STRETCH then I should maintain the character of the sound quite alot better??

Am I thinking the right way here?

What would be a good glissando setting - 10ms?
And should I preserve the harmonics for a cello in the 60-80% mark? I imagine there will be an advantage having some sort of shift - but possibly not down in the 0-10% range.

Sorry for all the questions but programming legato with samples strings is the biggest pain in the arse but something that I always need to do and I would like to understand the best way to achieve this with my Philharmonik buddy as soon as possible.

Thanks for the comments on the IKEY. I will wait a bit to see how it
fares before making a decision.

Cheers,

No need to be sorry. I think some demo projects plus the used patches/combies would be nice to have. That should cover many of our questions.
Either as project files for Cubase, Sonar, and so forth.
Or as a set of MIDI file plus Philharmonik combi.
The demo project do not need to be huge or whiole symphonies. Just some lessons on how to do good programming.

just ordered mine this morning , i didn't know it came with a dongle i may not of bought it if i knew that.

ive already got Cubase sx3 so thats 2 USB ports wasted.

hell at this rate i'll have to buy a spare hub just to run a battery of dongles

You dont have to use any more USB's . The license can be put in the Steinberg Key.

They both use Syncrosoft.

Now that is good news Flynn....cubase , groove agent 2 & Miroslav Philharmonik on 1 key now thats more like it

Yes, it's very good. And even better, I dont have to buy a separate Steinberg Key, if I want to run GA2 along with the other VSTi's on my machine second computer with V-Stack :)

Rellik -

I would like more info on this automation rendering "bug".

What automation cannot be rendered?
I can't see it using EnergyXT - unless I'm misunderstanding the bug.

I have to really put my body into the P80 to get the velocity up there; the curve is pretty steep. But I really *like* it that way.

Yeah - I agree.

That's why I was surprised because what I was observing in Philharmonik seemed to be the opposite.

But in any case, going into the Velocity section of Philharmonik and adjusting the AMP seemed to help.

Squids - how many velocity layers does the Steinway have - is P or PP represented in the sampling at all? I noticed on the lower velocities that it sounded a little more like volume reduction rather than the note being played lighter.

God - since when have I become so picky on piano samples... :hihi:

Some lab machines at my uni have dongles, what they do when they install these, is to mount a jumpered USB socket *inside* the case, which is then locked of course.

I didn't think of that, myself, and I thought it was a pretty intelligent idea. Beats epoxying the dongle to the port, which I have also seen.

Received my copy yesterday.

So far I'm very pleased. This is exactly what I was looking for. There's a lot of flexibility here to use this plug in a variety of ways.

The combis are a lot of fun to play. In fact, fun is one of the sensations I keep having while playing this.

There's a nice selection of articulations of individual instruments. I like the spiccato violin a lot.:violin:

I need to figure out what's going on in Sonar and Project 5. Activating the transport keeps automatically setting the "Swell" control back to 50 on the AMV patches. I'm sure there's something simple causing that, I just haven't figure out what yet.

At any rate, I'm happy. Well done Squids & Co.
