bmaniac: I like A more than B so I'd say it sounds better. :hihi:
A sounds phatter to me so this might be the slight distortion introduced by Volcano?
I wont reveal the answers until _starcraft_ has pointed out which one is volcano as he said it'd be so obvious. :hihi:
fritzman wrote: To add to the general discussion: To me a synth or FX has to "feel" right when -I- use it. I had it often that other people were able to get good sounding results from some gear that didn't sound good and/or didn't feel right to me when I tried/used it. This is a big factor for lot of people I think.
Indeed! Very wise words. I feel absolutely the same. This can even vary from day to day. One day I might go "damn.. this eq sounds like crap" and notice the next day that it's just the right thing for the job! This is why I use ABX when in doubt and sometimes I ask my girlfriend for opinions and if she can't hear any difference then I know I've taken it too far! :hihi:

btw u say i'm putting off ppl from trying the demo? i'm doin the exact opposite.I've invited ppl to try the demo so they can comment for themselfes.
and btw i see at least 4-5 ppl here that share their dislike for this plugin (and just 2 fanbois defending it)...so either most ppl are stupid or the fabfilter guys presented their product the wrong way (in case its not truly flawed).

actually i think my post should be very useful for the fabfilter developers so they can replace their so called "clean" preset(which is everything but clean)....and replcae it with yours.(as it seem to give a much better match to the original).
cos ppl will be turned off by the plugin immediately otherwise.
i allready deleted the demo so i cannot try those tricks u suggest(-20 on input and +20 on output, serial mode)...but they really should set it that way by default if it gives a more reliable result.
then ppl that want a more lofi sound can tweak to their likings.
but it's always best to start from a clean sound and work your way from there . my opinion.

_starcraft_:

For some certain reasons your opinion counts more than the opinion from bmanic here (for me). That should everyone be able to see too.

Because you did merely say your opinion, which is by the way proveble for me personally. And you adviced us to chek it ourselfes clearly.

bmanic is highly biased in his opinion, which actually makes me very curious (also because of my experiences with him). He defends all the problems with Volcano, trying to make it "advantages". That has really nothing to do with objectivity.

And if it was merely "subjective" - his personal taste, so I don't understand his endless try of prove us wrong or "fight" against our opinions.

Nobody did say here: "Don't try it. Don't check it out." In contradiction, we (having some clear opinions and experiences with that filter) highly suggest you to find it out yourselfes. We even know, that saying "that sounds bad" will finally couse the people to try it out themselfes because of curiousity...

But then, I still believe, some people are probably not even able to discover any problems with the product. But that's a completely different theme, which has certainly to do with experiences in that area - not only tastes ...

Nobody is wrong here.
We merely tell our opinions - based on our skills, tastes and experiences.

Good guess! Unfortunately you are wrong. :hihi: fritzman got it right. A = volcano, modified 'clean' preset and B = original

Well, if you mean me as a fanboy I think you are mistaken. I just disliked your obvious lack of any commitment to really try the plugin. Maybe you are not an experienced tweaker and more of a preset guy? If that's the case then my apologies coz that is totally cool too. And I DO AGREE with you that the 'clean' preset should be updated (and the manual could use some explaining of the built in distortion modeling or whatever they have there).
_starcraft_ wrote: actually i think my post should be very useful for the fabfilter developers so they can replace their so called "clean" preset(which is everything but clean)....and replcae it with yours.(as it seem to give a much better match to the original).

Well, why didn't YOU simply email them and be a bit more 'conservative' in the way you write your critique? Just because you (or a bunch of people) have a problem with the plugin doesn't mean that it's broken or flawed, it all comes down to taste in the end. This is obviously how the fabfilter crew wanted to design the thing and so be it.. I found tons of stuff in it already that I'd like to have different (and I have emailed them about it so much already that I'm embarrased to email any more!).
_starcraft_ wrote: but it's always best to start from a clean sound and work your way from there . my opinion.
Totally agree with you there. The original 'clean' preset IS clean enough for most signals unless you feed it a really hot one like a full mix or a drumloop but I see your point. My default preset is actually the modified clean preset with input gain set to about -10.

Now, anyways, with all this little debating I hope we can all learn to be a bit more considerate when writing praise/critique (I know I need to learn this at least!) because sometimes things are not broken but simply need to be tweaked in a different way than one is used to (another good plugin example is the Arts Acoustic reverb which takes a while to learn until you realize how good it truly is).

now then, and Cheers! to y'all!

Ok, show me some evidence? Am I biased just because I've had to keep telling people to "reduce the input gain!"?? .. but then again, you, J&H, putsekuchen, blah blah.. are such a psycho that it is impossible to discus with you in any manner whatsoever so I'll just quit talking to you, ok? :)

And one more thing: You are AMAZINGLY full of hot air, you know that? A balloon about to burst maybe? We're still waiting for all your superior DSP code and far superior plugins. ;)

I can't believe myself that I'm actually doing this but heck, even 000 (j&h, putsekuchen etc. etc.) might have a brain that functions on some level so maybe he can understand this? Here's what started the whole thing in this thread. Read it carefully. Do I sound agressive, biased and like somebody who tries to prove another human being wrong?

the dynamics , volume and presence get killed in that plugin.
just open the "clean" preset and hear how its not clean at all. compare by bypassing the plugin.
the sound of the filters is actually good....but the plugin somewhere in the audio chain does something starnge to the incoming audio....
u cant get the same sound comin in and out ofthe plugin....it just lowers the quality of the audio coming in. it's so evident.
ppl that said this is a good filter plugin need their ears checked.no offence....but its so obvious.
what i really liked though was the MIDI tiggering (for lfos and enevlope)on keypress. which make its seemlessly integrate with any softwsynth for example.
Yes, it does modify the incoming audio and kind of makes it a bit 'lo-fi' but have you ever considered that some might think this sounds awesome?? I for instance like it very much. I use Volcano as a transistor overdrive emulator all the time (try crankin' the input to max! It's fun :) ). If you don't like what the filter is doind simply reduce the input gain. make it -20 and then make the output +20dB. That usually takes care of most material (unless it's very hot full mix material in which case you need to insert a gain plugin before volcano).

One more thing, the filters 'clean' preset still removes some high frequencies even when cutoff knob is set to max. This is why you hear a slight 'muddying' of the sound. The filters are always switched on and do not seem to go all the way up (maybe to reduce aliasing? I don't know..)

Cheers!

And here's the bit that got me really going. This is why I posted the examples:

that's why it's not a good filter plugin.
u r losing quality . u don't want that.
at least i would never want that.
muddy sound is no thx

And once and for all, I am in no way connected to FabFilter, Voxengo, Kjaerhus, Ohmforce, Gmedia, Sintefex, Genelec, AMD, Yamaha, Roland, ArtsAcoustic, SynthMaker, SynthEdit, Native Instruments, Valio, Fazer, Fender

I just happen to like their products. :hihi:

Now, J&H, get a friggin life!!

BTW ... the HIGHLY acclaimed filter quadfrohmage also colours the sound when set to full cutoff and zero Q (and i dont hear anyone complaining about that) ...

... in fact the only one i personally have installed that doesnt is filterscape ...

... tis the nature of the beast

Ah,

now I see!!! You must be a Strat player!!! SINGLE COILS!!! OK, that's the problem. Get a humbucker at the bridge and a Floyd Rose on it, man. Then we're talking. Now then you can have a Volcano.

Sorry, I'm just kidding. Just wanted to make some jokes about all this super no-fun seriousness.
BTW, I DO play a custom built Strat with HSS pickups and a Floyd Rose ... :D

Have fun, FRitz

P.S. I dunno if you in some way could check out Vampire. It's a really good filter plugin. Made by ... Guess who? And no, I'm not <insert some disclaimer here> with the dev.
In the end will be the word.

Well, if you've seen 'the other' filter thread then you'll know that I'm not allowed to check it out because I'm an very biased and evil man according to the developer. ;)

HI

Blimey - seems like a real debate has opened up - in the meantime I have been trying out 'FabFilter', for a second time and think I under rated it last time!

I am well impressed with it's ability to go Subsonic - I can't think of any software filter that I have come accross that hit's that sub area so well - I have the PSP, Quad Frohmage and Antares filters which all have their specialty area (PSP as a multi-fx, Quad as a very versatile filter with an albeit tamer bottom end and the Antares is a SMOOTH filter for missions where less sonic destruction than the quad are needed - has a very smooth top end) but none of them hit that sub spot like the FabFilter - I have a pretty decent pair of K-Roks and a hefty power amp and at one point thought I blew my Tweeters on the FabFilter 'Cymbal's only' pre-set - it has a sweet top end as well.

I had a sherman filter bank, electrix filter, EMU Z-Plane module (didn't like the Z-Plane filters) amongst others and like filters - IMO though they are (for me) about radical sound shaping.

I need to check Frantic out ... sometime!

Flipper.

Who ever promised that?
Are you just so confused with your thoughts and bussy with your deformations and abusing, that you now got hallucinations?

Or is it rather merely the case, that you are *assuming* something here. Maybe you found out, that I am a developer and now your brain burns out because of doing stoopid illogical feedback loops?

Seems, that all those properties you try to assign to me are inside yourself.

At least, I really don't see what that all has to do with my opinions and the topic here...

But wait, it is an very old trick:
To try to make a person untrustworthy by claiming allot of lies about her/him. Mostly nothing related to the current thread and mostly done if all arguments are eaten up ...

You are a very poor person. And I have to admit, that I am not entirely able to understand your behaviour. But obviously it is *your fun* to spread wrong informations to keep our looks away from your own blamages.

My *fun* is to demask sneaky people like you.

My preview copy of volcano is timed out now...

I liked the way it f****d up my tracks, but I did have an issue with some poofs in Live 5 when tweaking the filters using the handle in the slope display--so I think I'll query the developer's forum before I plunk down the $99 bucks for it.

YMMV.
