delay in signal

I've just started fooling around with audio software, and I've been amazed at all that's possible, especially all that's possible without spending any or much money. However, when I plug my guitar or mic into my laptop's microphone jack (using a 1/4 to 1/8th inch adapter), there is a delay of almost 1/2 second when I record through Tracktion. This delay makes it impossible to play along with anything. How do I get rid of it?

its called latency, you need to buy a good card that supports ASIO or -- download asio4all (i think it works, right guys?)

Assuming the card in question isn't already ASIO capable, and doesn't just have a silly default buffer size.

yoimjason: have a look at which audio device Tracktion has chosen in the Tracktion settings, and if there is an ASIO option then select it, and set the buffer size to something like 1024 samples. If there isn't then:
download asio4all (i think it works, right guys?)
It works well for me. There's no substitute for a proper ASIO card of course, but at a pinch ASIO4ALL is good enough. :)

I brought my latency down to 704 samples, which is the lowest it will go without becoming a mess. It helped, but it's still not good enough.

ASIO4ALL seems like the perfect solution, but it says the output on my sigmatel audio is unavailable (the input seems to be working). Any ideas?

most likely you need to disable the MS GS Synth.

- Go to the control panel
- open the sounds and audio devices control panel
- switch the audio tab
- select any midi out device other than the MS synth.

Okay, I got ASIO4ALL working. Unfortunately, it seems to be having no effect whatsoever, even if I bring the buffer down to the minimum.

Okay, I got it working. It is beautiful. Thank you all so much.
