Need to move on from FL Studio 5.02

Hi people.
I've been a FL user for quite some time. And after being using it and learning it, I think It can do everything others hosts can. The trick is to use the step and piano roll sequencers.
If you Feel you are somehow unable with Fl, try it with samples, soundfonts and new VSTis, take your midi keyboard and practice with it, use other effects that are not the ones built-in(I spent 2 years using fl effects, and some time later I discovered vst technology). And, for God's sake, use velocity , pitch bending, and automation(now you have an EXCEPTIONAL automating-pattern thingy with multi-mode curves).
I use the combo FL+Vsti's+soundfonts+samples+etc.... You can do everything with it.
BTW, The piano roll can be adapted to any bar you want, just cut the LAST note length until it matches the step you want in song time, in the pattern list you will see the changes, of course, step sequencer is fixed, for complex note editing use the Piano Roll.
For example, a 4 bar pattern goes from 1 to 5 bars(it does start at 1 not 0), if you put a note lasting a bit more that 5:00 bar/step time, the pattern do expand.
And a last thing, you can use the loop mode for loop recording. Sometimes its good for pattern refining, I do spend hours refining patterns, and it is useable if you want to catch the natural velocity and character from the keyboard in your pattern, then you can procceed and hand edit those notes to get the most from fruity.
and remember, they changed the name of the program.
now it reads FL studio, they thought the old name was not doing it justice. it's not a toy anymore, LoL.
Sorry about my crap english.
cheers mates.

It's not a very good sequencer, really. No SYSEX support, and only a single MIDI control input, not very convenient for a rig that's mostly hardware controllers and synths.Hink wrote:btw gingo....what are the chief things you feel are lacking in FL?

I think the real trick is the pattern based sequencing. Some people just don't like it. I've been using FL Studio for a few years now and this is really the only thing I don't like about it. If you could "see" what the patterns consisted of in the playlist, it would be a whole different story. But I must say I am impressed with some of the features that have come out since I have owned it..automation lanes for one..and free updates for life..can't complain about that! The trick is to use the step and piano roll sequencers.

Except that "free updates for life" is a bit of a marketing con-job. If you owned the top-of-the-range version of Fruityloops 4 you had to pay to get to the top-of-the-range FL Studio 5, didn't you? Mind you, I'm not knocking it, they have to make a living somehow, I just think that its less than honest because they can move the goal-posts like they did between v4 and v5 whenever they want to. ORION users have probably only had to pay for the same number of upgrades over the years as Fruity users but Synapse doesn't try to leverage that to get people in. To me it seems a lot more honest.

I didn't... I use Sonar because it handles audio very well. FLS5 is cool but I'm starting to use Sonar now even for midi work. I think FLS needs an extrem makeover as far as its audio handling goes...BONES wrote:Except that "free updates for life" is a bit of a marketing con-job. I got the Producer's Edition, I just updated to the new version with no problems. Is this the version they are trying to screw me on?

as a Fruityloops owner, you are offered the possibility to upgrade to FL Studio Producer Edition, but you can stay with the Fruityloops Edition (and all the updates) of FLS without spending one penny. "free updates for life" remains valid in both cases.BONES wrote:Except that "free updates for life" is a bit of a marketing con-job. to speak your language: once upon a time, there were only ORION Pro. then, ORION Platinum came to life, etc.

I got the FLS 5 update free from the simple e-mail send to me by Image-Line.BONES wrote:Except that "free updates for life" is a bit of a marketing con-job. Now if any FLS-user wanted to move up to FLS XXL, then THAT would be the only exception. But if the user already had too many synths beforehand, they wouldn't need XXL anyway.

I bought FL XXL in version 4. Got XXL 4.2 and then all following updates including 5, totally free and will get V6 this coming september totally free too.
It is free updates for life until they change the program to a personal secretary that will run your pc and make your coffee and music for you

Agreed!Left Headphone wrote:I use Sonar because it handles audio very well. FLS5 is cool but I'm starting to use Sonar now even for midi work. I think FLS needs an extrem makeover as far as its audio handling goes...
For my audio works I render my FL channels and then use either Podium or Tracktion. Their audio handling is more polished but if I only have to add 1 or 2 guitars I stay withing FL for convenience.

i have used cubase SL, Samplitude, and Even Cakewalk, and i cant get away from using FL for composing, and sending those tracks into a multitrack audio proggty

remember gol himself said that FL's audio is designed for the person who uses it occasionally, that doesn't mean future versions wont improve as it's sometimes wise to go with the flow...like most know I use Adobe Audition for all my audio work and recording of live instruments and vox. It also can be set as my default wave editor in FL.Kaos Axiom wrote:Agreed!Left Headphone wrote:I use Sonar because it handles audio very well. However I use the audio clips for times when I want to rewrite a drum part (or something else) in FL to compliment a guitar or vocal part I did in AA. I make a clip to fit in the playlist to work with...

I went from pure trackers to FL in 1999 and it's all I use or need. I do all my midi and pattern-based sequencing on FLS. I've never used it for audio and don't need to. I have Audition, which interworks with FLS just fine.
