For my personal purposes, Filterscape is just doing great. And, on the freebie front, I really like the Kjaerhus one.
But then, apart from numerous WahWahs, I never owned anything with a real analog filter either, so my demands might be low.
Btw, Logics synths come with quite some great sounding filters, IMO.

There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Yes, Vampire. (You didn't meant any of NI's filters? Because you wrote Native with a capital N. Then my answer would be: No.)electro wrote:Are any Native filters better than Gmedias?

In the end will be the word.

bmanic, your test samples don't prove nothing. Filters are like eq's - can be tweaked in any way so this is not a fair to ask which is what. I'm not familiar with filters (in fact almost never use them
but this thread grabbed my attention and I'm to spare some time. There is clear loss of dynamics (punch) and depth in sample A. Now, this could be due to a number of reasons including filtering settings you used (and I don't know them) so I won't say it's due to filters faulty design. I'll check it out out of curiousity.
All I want to say for now is that this A&B thing is not fair and it is a hit bellow the belt.
Peace.

Actually some filter modes from QF have a neutral position. Like for everything mentioned in this thread it just depends on filter type... Some filters are made to allow this (to be used as a global FX at one point of the track as someone stated above). Some other are made to give a certain quality in certain conditions. For instances a synth's filter only has to work well with what comes for the synth, while you may want more flexibility from a filterbank. That's the beauty of it : there simply not one "does it all" filter. Hence the multiplicity of offers on the market, I guessBTW ... the HIGHLY acclaimed filter quadfrohmage also colours the sound when set to full cutoff and zero Q (and i dont hear anyone complaining about that) ...

yeah ... i wasnt knocking QF (i love it) ... just observing that as long as the colouration / whatever is seen as an integral part of the filter (like it often is with hardware and like it should with volcano etc IMHO) then you cant claim its a 'faulty' design ...
... on the other hand ... if a dev released a filter claiming it to be totally transparent (which AFAIK fabfilter havent) and it was then found to add colour you COULD say it wasnt working as it should ...

Umm.. did you read the whole thread? They are not supposed to prove anything, just that Volcano can run audio trough moderately transparently if wanted to.omo wrote:bmanic, your test samples don't prove nothing.
Btw. looks like the FabFilter team IS lurking here and reading this thread because I sure as hell didn't email them with the request to change the clean filter!
Cheers!

Now THESE are some tasty filters!
Developers, meet Enigiser. I'll be expecting these sort of filters in the near future
And hi bManic, I hope your stressful project is over

Yes THESE are truly nice ones! I'm glad you found that old Future Music CD.
Well, the CD is on it's way to the Netherlands right now for pressing so I guess there's nothing more I can do..jmh wrote: And hi bManic, I hope your stressful project is over![]()
I'll be home all day today and consume massive amounts of tea and play CSS. :p
I've got some nice pictures from the mastering so I'll be posting those later today.
Cheers!

Btw, regarding the Volcano debate, from FabFilter's Volcano 1.1.1 release notes on 03Sep:
FabFilter Volcano version 1.11 fixes possible internal overflows that could
occur with certain combinations of settings and input sounds. These
overflows would result in extreme CPU spikes. The Clean preset has been
changed to reduce distortion with loud input sounds, but it is still not
intended to be completely transparent.
Don't know if this will change anyone's opinion, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

h/w tb303, extremely cool with external input mod
asr10 filters, no resonance, but does that sound very well.
JV1080, can do some very cool sounds.. although I'd prefer a constant-Q type rez.
And there's plenty of VSTis too, with decent filters. WE'RE STILL ITERATING ON THAT ONE, AREN'T WE!
Well, NI seems to have made some really good ones in FM7 though.

Well if it solves the poof-ing problems I had in Ableton Live 5, then I'll buy it.polyslax wrote:Btw, regarding the Volcano debate, from FabFilter's Volcano 1.1.1 release notes on 03Sep:
