Hey all,

Check out this thread at the Auditorium:

http://audioshots.com/auditorium/viewto ... 8671#18671

Basically, I CAN play some bass (even if it's with a guitar and the pitch-shifter), but it'd be more cool to have a bass player involved. Then it'll be a power trio; more like a band than an individual effort. I LIKE that. :D

If nobody steps up, I'll either borrow a bass or just use my guitar, so no pressure. But if anyone feels like joining in, you're welcome to.

If anyone wants to do some acoustic strumming just for the heck of it, that's another 'job' that could be open if you'd like to do it. I have that one 'under control', but nothing wrong with extra contributions. ;)

And finally, if anyone fancies doing the final mix-down, that'd be fun, too-- I'll likely do my own mixdown as well because that's one of the things I'm always working on (I'm still only a yellow belt, but I'd like to be a blackbelt some day!) but if someone fancies giving it a shot, I'd "publish" (ie. just here and on my personal website, I'm not gunning for any contracts or anything-- just having some fun) THAT version and just keep working on my own mixes for practice.

Greg,

I'm no bass player, but my latest KVR song contest entry is getting decent reviews for the bass line (which is really funny - it was a single take, just to mess around with Voxengo's Boogex amp simulator and an Ampeg/SM57 impulse response) It was crackling all over the place while I tried to record with the plugin live so I couldn't even tell what it sounded like. Rendered the track and bang, the tone was ON. This from my $119 cheapo SX bass guitar that I bought last fall - through a little single channel dbx mini pre microphone pre-amp. You might want to check out SX basses at www.rondomusic.net

If you want to hear the song, it's on Markleford's KVR Radio list There, that's not a direct link so SP3D shouldn't mind.

I'm dl'ing the archive by the way to have a listen to see if I might help out.

i'll have a pop at mastering if you want?

Hi Greg,
Sounds like fun.
I'd be happy to give it a try(the bass track). I'm dl'ing right now to check it out. Is there some kind of schedule? It might be this weekend before I could cut a "keeper" track.

editted for clarity.

Post

No real schedule. If anything it'll take longer than just this weekend. ;) I'm a busy man, too. Schools to visit... girlfriends to keep content... a dog to walk.

either r_n or bk, I'd appreciate either of you doing one. I certainly don't want to offend anyone by picking one over the other-- if neither of you mind spending time on something that may or may not get used, then you can both go for it; otherwise, I'll just have rockstar do it to begin with, since he offered first.

Subz, you're welcome to the mastering job. You want to mix, too, or just master the mixdown?

I can host pretty much anything, as long as only a few people are downloading it. Since it's just you, it won't be a real hit on my bandwidth. ;)

when I use to play bass my hands were like so fking hard and my fingers were like steel rods. now im afriad to bleed agian. but I'll give a go mabey 8)

Went to the link greg but I dont have traction :? If you can mpeg it that would be great

Alright, 2 new files posted to the Audioshots link.

"Mockup with Android" is 2 verses, with all initial instruments.

"Android Drums - No Bass" cuts out the bassline, so if you don't want to hear mine, just go for that one.

Cheers for the offers so far!

rockstar_not-- that IS a good bass tone. I should look into picking myself up a cheap bass sometime. I was thinking of just slapping one together from a Saga kit, but for pretty much the same price I could get the SX or similar. I'm sure a store around here MUST have a Cort or something similar for cheap.

For the people who ARE attempting a bass part:

Make sure it's relatively simple. In "empty" parts you can put a fill or whatnot IF you think it's in good taste; however, with the guitars being so 'busy' already, be conservative with note selection. In my mockup, I wouldn't want it much busier than it is in the second half. A bit more well-executed and tastier, sure, but not too much busier. I'm all about fairly understated bass parts for this kind of song.

Greg,

I've got no problem doing a bass line with others in a 'bake-off'. Trust me, I have absolutely no ego to support as a bass player. It's a relatively new thing for me. I'll do it as an exercise in trading tracktion archive files around for nothing else. But I will be out of town this weekend so I'm sure someone else will get to it first.

Greg,

SX has a 30 day money back guarantee. I'm just not sure they can ship to Canada because of trade restrictions.

They have a great reputation on-line (look up www.talkbass.com and go to the Essex/SX megathread).

Another brand name which these basses are sold under is Jack and Denny
http://www.jandd-guitars.com

I'm not sure if you can find these in Canada or not.

Anyhow, I would contact Kurt at Rondo Music to see how much it would cost to ship to Canada.

Several friends that have tried out this bass just rave at the value. Even a guy that has custom American Strat.

Scott,

I'll look into it. Usually it's the shipping and duty that kills the price when 'importing' from the States. :(. We have a lot of "Jay Turser" stuff up here for the budget-type stuff. Not sure that's the same OEM though. Most of them are made by Samick anyhow. ;)

Regarding the bass part-- cool beans, give'er a go!

Hey Greg... Would love to help out but my wife has me painting the house so my hands are relatively tied up at the moment. I have a couple of basses and very good amp e/w DI so I can get some very good sounds from it.
If you're looking for an inexpensive quality bass you should run over to your local St John's music and look at the Yamaha RBX270. You should be able to pick one up for a little over $200 cdn. While there take a look at their shelf stock as sometimes you will find some great bargains on some of the highend stuff that's been taking up shelf space. Last year I picked a Brian Moore Custom bass worth $1500us for $500 cdn. It hung on the rack for a couple of years (not a big market for higher end basses in Regina). Since picking up the BM, the Yamaha has been pretty lonely.
