What are the best filters you have heard??

Has anybody mentioned the Mutronics Mutator? That's got to be the best filter I ever heard. In the world of VST, I'm quite impressed by FabFilter Volcano. It's no Sherman or Mutronics, and it doesn't bite particularly hard, but I think it's the smoothest filter I've heard inside a computer.

No comments on the last mp3 I posted? Maybe it was too obscure.
This is a quick approximation of tb303 + external input I did.
kl3in: I've heard the mutronics, but unfortunately never had the chance to try it myself. Sounds very good though.

well, it sounds ... OK. Nothing special to my ears but the beauty is in the ear of the beholder. Not the things i'm after.
Same goes for your newer example.

Umm.. no offense meant but IMHO this filtering does not sound very good. It's rather 'thin', the resonance itself that is. It's also rather shrill (harsh) and I'm pretty sure the .mp3 compression actually helps mask the true problems a bit.Silent Mind 2005 wrote: This is a quick approximation of tb303 + external input I did.
This example is pretty much the exact opposite to what the Orgon Enigiser clip was. That one was 'thick, fat, nasal (in a good way), raw, edgy' etc.
Your earlier example has a bit the same problems. I think it's too 'thin'. It's somehow like the resonance is just a simple static sinewave or something (which I'm sure it isn't but I'm trying to find words to describe). IMHO a fat, raw filter reminds a bit of oscillator hard sync except that it constantly 'vibrates' or modulates within itself. This creates that liquid feel of the filter in the orgon enigiser.
all just my humble opinion

.mp3 compression helps make the true problems..
This is a quick approximation of tb303 + external input I did. [flac]
Unfortunately flac did not seem to support 24bit files.
I know what you are trying to describe with the orgon enigiser resonance.
I can probably get closer to that sound if I want.
5 min..

The Flac shows exactly what I meant with the mp3 actually 'helping' the sound. In the flac you can hear much clearer the 'grainyness' of the filter when it goes high resonance in the end. The mp3 actually masks that a bit. Anyways, my original comments still stand, it's too thin for my liking.
Don't take this as offence, it's just my opinion and should be taken as such.
Cheers!

Yes, I see quite a few opinions here on KvR, and I have my own too ofcourse.
TMP rez tweak
It's not really Orgon sound, but it shows that it can be approximated. I exaggarated the effect here though. To get the sound that the orgon filter has, one has to have the exact same filter and saturation, and/or other things.
Which I certainly don't have here.
(If it's possible at all to completely digitally mimic)

why did you ask? Didn't you check it out?
And don't forget that it's possible to like and make more than one style of music.
BTW, I rechecked your first flac and I think that the filter itself sounds good with no or low resonance. The resonance of it sounds too thin for me. Too cold. That part when you cranked the volume up sounded better than the rest. Was that just the volume or is there something nonlinear happening?

This one has at least some descriptions about the filters, albeit in german...
Babelfished, some things sound funnyPerhaps some german person could be kind of enough to translate as some bits in the filter description table are gibberish after babelfishing - it's the 'P A' option that doesn't translate well (first of the phase filter options).

In english:
Band rejection filter with one filter pole. The band rejection effect is made by adding frequencies that are out of phase.
Something like that.

..Is this warm enough for you, fritz?
Here is a little testtrack I wrote.
It uses quite a bit of various things that I am working on currently.
Who knows which of them will eventually make into some kind of product.
Filters on synth particulary was something I reviewed when this discussion came up.
Also ofcourse dynamics processing.

Thanks Fritzman
Makes sense... this is what happens to one's brain with too much coffee, graphics design (deadlines getting close, tomorrow I'll be able to afford about 4 hours of sleep if the deadline arranged with the ad agency, print shop etc. is to be kept
) and spending too much time online instead of working
(in other words, that was rather obvious now that you confirmed that sentence's contents)
Have to check out those clips from Silent Mind 2005 after I get some shuteye though, been awake for over a day now...
Freelancing, sheesh =)

Hi Ove,
hm, I might not have been clearly enough on that. That piece of music sounds interesting, nice pumping.
But for the filter thingy we were talking about before: I was talking about the resonance of the filter not sounding right. The resonance is too cold according to my taste.
More like this would be cool:
Resobass.mp3
You see what I meant?

Silent Mind 2005 (what a tedious name to write
) your first clip sounded interesting... though there's something odd sounding going on at the end when the cutoff goes low... some kind of pre-filter distortion/overdrive perhaps?
I kind of liked it, doesn't remind me that much of a real 303 but still, that chirpiness with high resonance and filter going up, me likey. Would be interesting to hear how that behaves under typical envelope control (especially in a 303 kind of way, with some accent emulation going on).
Not bad at all, I'd say. Overall it has a nice character.

JMH
