Gnarl is something else. While gnarl is usually percieved as extremely obnoxious by most audiophiles, gnarf is a pleasing effect, and not gnarly, like gnarl.

Also, jmh, I think my own filter sounds better than those in the soundexamples you linked to there.
Hehe,

now it's talk about what "is usually percieved as extremely obnoxious by most audiophiles"!!! WOW.
I don't give a cent on what anybody calls anything and if this is the correct buzzword.
What are audiophiles anyway? I'm a musician and audio engineer and I con't care if anybody calls it gnarf, gnarl, bleps, blippyness, oomph or phardt. It has to rock in the end. Another buzzword, hehe :hihi:  8)

Like this filter: FilterA.mp3

Have fun, FRitz

jmh: It's all over this track.

And yeah, I am working on something.

Leave Brita out of this, she's a nice girl!

Fritz That last example was... shall we say, boring, ordinary, nothing special. Analog or not, there's no character there. Of course it whistles cleanly to the point of self oscillation but other than that... not exactly thrilling.

(And before anyone jumps the gun, that's an opinion, not an attack towards anyone's character simply because our tastes differ... looks like every post needs a couple of disclaimers nowadays when everybody is in attack mode :P)

Silent Mode Nice to hear, we could still use some more decent filters even though the market is saturated :)

(Too many run of the mill filters without any character, the current trend seems to be adding dozens of features without trying to get the filter itself to sound different from everybody else's efforts)

Hi JMH,

exactly my opinion! :D It wasn't 100% serious though, really. This is minimonsta. Just to demonstrate that it's ALWAYS the patch and what's played/modulated that makes it sound good. Or in this case: Makes it sound flat. Even this so highly praised synth can easily sound boring. I wanted to see if anybody recognized it and liked it. I was nearly sure that this wouldn't happen. :hihi:

And yes, if someone comes up with a cool VA synth I'm interested. Even though it should come with a $500 bank transfer to my account (Freeware? Pfff!), 3000 presets at the start with the promise that 8000 more presets will be freely delivered in two weeks and it has to use no CPU. You know the game.
OK, seriously: I'm interested in evey good sounding synth that gives something to me. No matter if it's a 303, Moog or Oberheim emulation. Did I say Ober....? :D
I'm just no fan of this "HEY, my filter is the bestest EVER!" stuff. This is so rediculous. Now everybody spell: T A S T E !

Best wishes, FRitz

What do you expect. All digital audio filters are basically the same algorithm (either IIR or FIR). Mostly IIR.

All the differences in sound are limited to the used coefficients, stages and probably the used saturation.

There is not so much variousity in the classic filter sound. The differences are rather very subtile and depend very much of the type of input.

With other words: all is finally about the filter tuning (none linear behaviours , coefficient tweaking and so on). One can spend ages with such resurch and last but not least the *ear* decides, not the math.

Interesting will it become if you combine filters smart and add such special cases like comb filtering, phasers and nonelinear saturators and more analog tweaking behaviour.

nd yes, the additional features (modulation possibilities and additional effects) are very important for the differences in filzer sound and behaviour. The algorithmic filter kernel is very limited (and tends to sound always the same).

What?
Do you actually understand yourselfes, what you wrote?

I would be very interested in about what your knowledge about filter technique and coding is. :hihi:

Probably not – I have not had any proper sleep in the last 48 hours. So a bit grouchy and probably got annoyed by the waffle  mind you the quick edit you done makes it more understandable ;)

Best regards,

Peter

So then your only purpose was to attack me, right?
Well, that is usually my job to attack here, you know? :hihi:

If you all are really *that smart*, why don't you simply "build" your own filters? Filters, which kick us ass? (That goes especially to smartass JMH - I think he outed himselfes already as super SM expert lately ... :hihi: )
