* for getting more out of the morphing, we will start with step014!

* „pause“ is a function you may use if you hear any sound, which is in between the two morphing-states. and if you want to break the morphing for a while!
* use „apply“ if you would end the morphing at the state, on which the crusher is in the moment!
* the button „ff“ is to go forward, to the end of the morphing! use this, if you simply want to speed up the morphing, which is running!
* please test these buttons, with the oscillator-frequency and a long morphing time!
* tip: you may also morph between different files! if you load another file, and the morph slider is on, you will hear the morphing from the old file to the new one! all crusher functions will get morphed!

* so, at this time, it’s really from which file, of the tutorials before you will start!
* load any file and push „start“!
* make shure that all oscillator-volumes are up to 0dB! so that you will hear the most differences!
* then look at the „Reset/Random“-window down in the crusher! there you see reset and random buttons for most crusher functions! we will concentrate on the „DCO“-buttons, because we already know the DCO.
* now, push the dco button in the random-field!
* so, it’s not predictable for me, what you will hear! the crusher will simply randomize all sliders of the four oscillators in the dco-window!
* you may test the crusher and push a 100 times on the dco-random-button, no sound we be the same, to another! (beside, if you do it exactly for eternity, you will get pairs, and so on...)
* the corresponding dco-reset will turn the oscillators in it’s default-state.

* we will start with step016! now we will go further and randomize the whole crusher!
* to do that, you will have to go to the mixer and turn up the crusher, and turn down the thru-sliders! we will describe the reasons for that in a later tutorial!
* the same functions as the dco-reset-random we explored in the tutorial before, are also for the other buttons, like D/L/P, S/D, Filter and Vol/Pan.
* D/L/P are delay, length, pause.
* S/D are speed, direction
* Filter should be clear, and Vol/Pan is volume and panorama (so, right-left in a stereo-field!)
* the All-button will randomize or reset all sliders of the crusher!
* press the random-all button and look at the crusher how he changes the sliders!
* then have fun and press „start“!

Overview: we will load and play a sample-file.

* the sampler is an essential function of the crusher! as you might know, a sampler is something which plays audio-files!
* open the crusher and reset everything! so you have to go to the file-menu, new, and push new1(reset).
* pull down the direct generator outputs and the „In’s“, the „crusher“, the „dco“ and the „feed“! adjust the „thru“-sliders to 0dB nad make shure that the sampler and the „out’s“ are on 0dB!
* now we will load a sample file! to do that, you have to press the open-button! it appears an file-dialog where you can open an audio-file (*.wav)! for those exercises there is a „samples“ directory in your „crusherXLive“ folder! please choose the „ambient.wav“-file and press open!
* start your crusher and press on the big button on which the name of the sample „ambient.wav“ apeared. now you will hear the full sample one time! you may also see that sample in the „Oscillograph“-window if it’s opened! and you will see a red status-bar going from left to right!

* please load the step018! we will start at that point!
* make shure that the file „ambient.wav“ is loaded and that you have the same mixer-configuration as in step018!
* to explain the sampler function fully, you have to know the the crusher doesn’t load the chosen sampler in your RAM! so, you don’t need to have a lot of RAM to play long samples! the samples will be directly streamed from your harddisc!
* so, you shurely wondered why the sample stopped after some seconds! therefore the crusher has a typical sample-function called „loop“.
* please press the loop-button and start the crusher! so, you will see that the sample will be repeated endlessly!
* this is a basic function! we will later concentrate on the more specific loop arguments, called „start“ and „stop“!

Overview: the loaded samplefile will get a new looplength

* for starting, you have to load step019! we successfully made a sample-file to play and to repeat the full length!
* now, it’s time to learn how to change the samplelength, without changing the whole sample in another application! to be more precise, we will change the starting point of the loop and the ending point! therefore, the crusher has two sliders, called „start“ and „stop“!
* so, you may shorten the sample and pull the start-slider up, and push the stop-slider down! don’t worry that the stop slider never can be pushed deeper than the start-slider! let’s think about it! so, if we adjust the stop-slider down, we will hear that the sample gets even shorter! but everytime ther has to be an positive interval between start and stop. if that wouldn’t be like that, there wouldn’t be anything left to play!
* to bring the crusher to sound like a damaged cd-player, you simply have to make the intervall between start and stop very small! so drag the stop slider down, and press start to start the crusher!
* now you will hear a very short loop!
* that effect becomes very interesting, if you now drag the start slider up! you will see that the stop slider will also change! so, now your crusher became an ill-cd-player!

Topic: changing the speed of the sample

Overview: the loaded samplefile will get another speed


-let’s start with step019! that has been the tutorial with a simple-looped sample!
-now we will explore a new sampler-function called „speed“
-„speed“ in that case is the same as the pitch-function as you might already know! it’s nearly the same as to transpose a sample to a higher or a lower note! but without keeping the samplelength! so, for example, if you want to pitch a sample for whole octave, you have to double the speed and it’s easy to calculate that the samplelength will be the half!
-so, this example we will now demonstrate with the crusher.
-press start, to start the crusher! you should hear the sample with the normal speed! the normal speed is 1.00! to put the sample lower, the speed is between 0,1 and 0,99! to pitch the sample up the speed is over 1.00!
-to double the speed, simply klick into the textfield under the speed-slider, and write 2,00 in and press return! so, you will hear the sample one octave higher!
-please test what happens if you push the slider near to 0! and think about the case, what you would hear if it would be possible to drag the slider down to zero!

Topic: combining different samples and functions

Overview: more samples were loaded and combined with the sample-functions!

-at that point we will start with step021. that was the one with the octave-pitched ambient-wav sample!
-now, let’s try to load 4 samples in the crusher!
-the first sampler is already loaded with the ambient.wav! the press „2“ in the sampler window! now you can push load, in the sampler-window and choose the secound sample! please go to the crusher directory and the samples-folder! now, choose window.wav!
-do the same with the third an the fourth sampler and choose beat.wav for the third and strings.wav to the fourth sampler! you should now know how!
-to get an interesting sample-combination do the following points! choos the secound sampler and minimize the playing-intervall (if you don’t know how this works, please read the tutorials bevore!). then change the speed to a very low value. so that the length is 4times as long as the original length!
-choose the third sampler and transpose the beat one whole octave down! so, the beat becomes slower and grovy!
-now choose the strings and adjust the samplelength in that way, so that you won’t hear the fade-in in the beginning and the piano in the end of the string-sample!
-all samples should be looped! now press start! and listen what you have done!
-tip: to transpose between the normal speed and the double speed you may click on „x1“ to transpose to the normal speed and click on „speed“ to get the octave! so, you have the possibility to change between the two speeds very fast and exactly!

Overview: repeating step005 we will explain the vapor-modulations

-now we will start to use the crusher, really! until now we simply played the oscillators and samplers, but not through the vapor-modulations, the heart of the crusher!
-please load the step005. that was the one, with the simple sine tone.
-let’s take a look at the mixer.you will see that the two sliders „thruL“ and „thruR“ are not down. so please pull them down. now pull up the crusher-slider in the mixer! you will hear the same tone, but it seems to get modulated!
-so, to illustrate the crusher you may open the „cloud 3D“-window! go to the windows-menu und press „show cloud 3D“! now you should see a system with three ordinates! the x-axis for the time, the y-axis for the number of generators and the z-axis for the delay-time! we will describe details, later!
-in the Vapor-Settings menue is a pull-down-menu which is called „window-type“. this type specifies the type of grain which the ganular synthesis of the crusher generates! please choose „SharpRect“!
-now, please go to the „Vapor-Modulations“-window and press the „Pause“-button!
-to get the sine-tone, drag the „offset“-slider down to zero! please listen and look at the „cloud 3D“-window while dragging down!
-after that, you should hear your good old sine-tone! please notice the difference to step005!

Topic: sine tone-that sounds like a telefone.

overview: now we will discover the first modulation, with vapor-modulation! we will receive an rectangle, so that it will sound like a telefone!

-the first step is, to repeat step023, so that you get a clear sine-tone with 440hz! Read the the tutorial and go through the steps!
-then go to the „vapor-modulations" window and press the button „volume "
-here we can add an lfo (low frequency oscillator) to the volume of our 440hz sine tone.
-first, please click in the textfield of „speed", write in the number „1" and press return!
-now we have an lfo which repeats every second! Perhaps you wonder, why you cant hear any changes, but the lfo doesnt know what to repeat, at the moment.
-now go to the slider called „depth" and pull it down until -60db!
-so, you can hear and see in the „oscillograph"-window that the tone is fading up and down every second!
-now look at the pulldownmenue called „mode". There you can adjust the waveform in which the oscillation is working.
-to get a sound like a telefone, you may enter „Rect", which means rectangle. It opens and closes every second.

overview: we will extend the tutorial before, and lets the panorama toggle.

-first of all, open step024! that was the tutorial with the fon-signal!
-now, we will extend that fone-tone with an panorama, to get a better idea of the parameters of the crushers modulations.
-to do that, simply press the „pan“-button in the „vapor-modulations“-window and pull the „depth“-slider up or down! you will hear that the sound gets only to one side, the more you pull the slider.
-now, adjust the modulation-speed to 1.5hz and you will hear the changing left-right-signal which repeats anoying!
-tip: to get a clear cut between left and right, then choose the modulation mode to „rect“. just like the volume. you should know now what the difference between „rect“ and „sin“ is! if not, test it!

-once again, we start with step023. the clear sine-tone through the crusher.
-then, please press the „pause“ button in the „vapor-modulations“-window!
-make sure that your „Cloud 3D“-window is opened! on the time-axis you see a thick red beam.
-make sure that the „speed“-slider is down to zero! we don’t want any lfo in the moment.
-now, slowly drag the „depth“-slider up and down! you will hear that the sound becomes some holes in it! and look at the cloud-window. you see the grains splitting its own parts! now we can explain the sine-signal before. the sine signal has been a signal which has been put together of lots of parts with the same sound. the grains were simply pasted together! when we tune on the „depth“-slider of the „pause“-parameter we drag the grains apart from each other! so you see the different grains, and hear the silence between them (if you put the „depth“ to a very high value.

-this time, let’s start with step024!
-make shure that the cloud-window is still opened! so that you see the grains!
-first of all, go to the volume-submenu of the „vapor-modulations“ and set the speed to 0.5Hz! so, the effect will become clearer, because it’s a longer time period! because a period will last 2seconds.
-now, press the „speed“-button to access the Speed-parameters of the crusher!
-set the speed frequency to 1Hz, so that the period lasts exactly 1second!
-and finally, set the „depth“ to 100%! now you will hear that some grains become a higher tone. first, it’s raising then its fading down! and look at the cloud-window! the higher grains are drawn in a brighter color, till white!
-to explain the higher tone, we have to understand the fact that the grains aren’t really higher. they are simply played faster. just like the speed of the sampler in the tutorials before!
-tip: if you play the grains slower, the are drawn blue! you may see it if you drag the „offset“-slider down!

-let’s go on with step027 and extend it a little!
-so we are still performing the speed window inside the vapor-modulations window. i suggest to increase the depth! to 199.0%. so the differences are better to hear! it’s not a must!
-you surely suggest what happens if you change the „mode“ to another waveform! so test the different waveforms! you will recognize the differences very fast.
-here a little description:

*sin: the lfo changes in a sine-form, slowly up and down.
*triangle: nearly the same, like sin, but the up and downs are drawn by lines.
*sawdn: just like the second half of the triangle. a simple line down.
*sawup: like sawdn, but other direction.
*rect: only two values are given. the lfo jumps directly between them.
*random: randomly chosen values. not predictable
*randomline: randomly chosen values, but drawn a line between them. and only one line for a period.
*x up pm-field: the speed-effect is changed with the red ball in the „physical model“-field. and of course the x-value.
*x dn pm-field: same as x up pm-field, but the max and min-values are swaped
*y up pm-field: same as x up pm-field, but on the y-axis
*y dn pm-field: same as y up pm-field, but swapped values
*offdn(100%): doesn’t modulate, it simply gives the highest value back, so 100%
*off (50%): same as offdn(100%), but it gives back the middle-value between 100& and 0%
*offup(0%): only the lowest value of the LFO

-we start with step028!
-we are still in the speed-window of the vapor-modulations and will now explore the process-slider which allows us to change the mode-forms in detail.
-in normal mode, the process slider should be on lin, which means linear. so we would receaive a clear sine-lfo, for example. just like in the step028.
-so, move it to the right or click on exp! you will hear that the sound is most of the time very low. the process-slider modified the sine-graph more down. so that most of the values are low.
-to the other side, click on log, and the most values are high!
-same changes are received with the other waveforms.
-the process slider allows you to perform your lfo in a logarythic or exponential way, and everything in between!
