joachime, thanks for the files! The .wav should be working now. I just downloaded it again to make sure.
Taking a listen to your clips now!
EDIT: this thread is becoming seriously dangerous to my financial situtation. Now that dream of owning a couple of UAD-1 cards came flooding back at me! Aaarrrgghhh!

Oh my, both the LA2A and 1176 samples sound VERY good!!! I've been resisting UAD-1 because I've sworn off PCI cards, but ..... ummmmmm .......joachime wrote:Here's some UAD-1 samples. I realize, they may be a bit modest (compared to previous samples)

Okay, this soundclip exchange might not be the best way of comparing compressors, but it's fun none the less.
Here's a bunch of Compadre Beatpuncher samples:
First one is Compadre default settings with just the threshold pulled down:
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compadre-default.mp3
Then a couple using some of the presets:
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compad ... dcrush.mp3
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compad ... lassic.mp3
Some punchy setups:
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compadre-coolpunch.mp3
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compad ... tnfirm.mp3
And some rather radical settings to finish it off:
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compadre-funkmeup.mp3
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compadre-nervous.mp3
http://www.otiumfx.com/files/mp3/compad ... frenzy.mp3
Best regards,
Rune

Ok, thanks! I've downloaded the wav-file, maybe I can replace the clips later this evening.bmanic wrote:joachime, thanks for the files! The .wav should be working now. I just downloaded it again to make sure.
Do you want me to add some samples with harder compression as well?

OK this proves nothing really but it's fun so WTF:
Conventional Compressors
Dry, No Compression

Voxengo Crunchessor

Elemental Audio Neodymium

Cakewalk Project 5 Compressor

Cakewalk Sonitus Example 1

Cakewalk Sonitus Example 2
Multiband or Weird

AIPL Warmtone
(Yes I know, it's not a compressor at all, but the natural tape and tube compression does a pretty serviceable job, no?)

Digitalfishphones Endorphin
(Technically it's a multiband because it does 2 bands of compression.)

Voxengo Soniformer
(Silly example, but fun)

Awesome stuff dburgan!! I especially liked that neodynium (argh! what a name!) example. Going to download that demo again now and check it out once more.
Cheers!

I'd love to hear how the LA-2A sounds when it is truly slammed hard. Extreme examples in general are where the native compressors seem to fail.joachime wrote:Ok, thanks! If you happen to have the Fairchild then I'd be very interested in hearing that too, smashed.

Here's another compression example on the drum file. This time it's another freebie, a good one, E-phonic's Xpressor.

Just had to tweak compadre a bit more. It's huge fun! I now got a quite extreme setting that seems to swing a bit with the groove. Check it out!

And here's one more compressor plugin that I own. Got a really nice agressive sound out of this one.

I remade my samples, working with the wav-file this time.
Changed ratio from 12:1 to 8:1 on 1176 LN to compensate for increased input gain (to smash it harder).
Also added a sample from TLs Saturated driver.
I'm sorry I couldn't attach images to the set.

I ran a little test on how compressors behave when oversampled. Here are two examples, I'll tell later which is which. To my ears it's quite clear how much the Sonalksis Compressor benefits from x4 oversampling (bounced at 192kHz, r8brain downsampled to 44,1kHz) during heavy compression but decide for yourself.

Sonalksis B (2mb .wav file)

Yes, it's quite heavily smashed that one. Even too much for my own personal tastebmanic wrote:Whoah!Rune L-H wrote:Okay, this soundclip exchange might not be the best way of comparing compressors, but it's fun none the less.

RuneNow, THAT's nice! Mega smashed up! Nice one Rune. Happen to have that as a .fxp file?
Cheers!

The .fxp file can be downloaded here: http://www.otiumfx.com/files/Frenzy.fxp
I'm not able to listen to any of the new samples posted tonight. Looking forward to doing so tomorrow.

I prefer sample A. There's more punch on the kick drum and the pumping cymbals are less annoying.bmanic wrote:I ran a little test on how compressors behave when oversampled. Here are two examples, I'll tell later which is which.
But I really can't tell if it's an effect of upsampling or not...
