I've got a Firewire 410w, e2e is toggled.
during play and whilst recording I can barely hit minus 20db? I've got to set my volume at full blast to hear anything.
has anyone got any ideas?

You have your interface set for "Pro" levels (-10dbV) but your monitors are expecting "consumer" level signal?

I use a FW410 without this problem - are you sure you have the settings correct in the M-Audio mixer? I've occasionally had the faders come up as lowered after I've used my laptop without the audio interface attached.

If your M-Audio control panel is the same or similar to the Delta one, also check out your "Settings" screen. Under "Variable signal levels" click on the "sliders" button and you have variable control of per channel input and output levels even beyond the +4/Consumer/-10 standard settings.
