Trying to undestand MIDI a bit more (at least under Tracktion) and had some questions:

1. I was using ModuLR's Stepchild and the SFZ with Drumkit for some beat progamming. In the piano roll I know that the D note right after the C note listed as C 1, would give me snare hits. But in Stepchild I had to enter D 3 to get those MIDI notes. Is there a way to list the actual note numbers on the Keys in the Piano Roll instead of just the C-Notes with C -1, C -2, C 0, etc?

2. Is there a way to record multiple MIDI tracks to one Track? I have lets say 6 drum tracks, I want to route those to track 7 and have track 7 record a mix of all the 6 tracks. I've messed around with AUX send and AUX return, but that didn't work. I also tried having all the six tracks output to MIDI Yoke 1, and then have track 7's input be MIDI Yoke 1, but when I press record I can hear the beats, but nothing records.

3. Can anyone recommend a miniature MIDI keyboard/controller that can trasmit its MIDI across USB? I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface that I use to record bass into Tracktion with and it works great. But when I want to lay keyboard parts down in MIDI, or play a VST like Revitar, I have to enter the individual notes (UGH!) or use MKEY to get close, but my timing is off with keyboard presses. (and my 15 year old Casio VZ-1 just ain't gonna cut it! :) )I would like to have real time MIDI note recording while playing.

Any info would be great!

not currently (although it would make a good FR if its hasnt been asked for already) ... you CAN adjust where T2 thinks middle C is on the settings page but not far enough to make it match stepchild ... TBH though not sure why this is an issues ... if you use stepchild for your beats opnce you know where the 'bottom' note for your drumkit is then the rest should follow easily ... even if you were to drag-n-drop the MIDI into a T2 clip you would just select all the notes and drag them together to the right place ... unless im misunderstanding what youre asking ???

just route each track to track 7 ... select each one in turn and in the list on the right of the properties panel you can select where its output goes ... once youve done this for all your drum tracks just select the 'group' track and render it into the project as a new audio track ...

i use this (well ... the older version of it anyway) - http://www.evolution.co.uk/products/evo_mk425c.htm - but there are loads of similar keyboards from the other main audio gear manufacturers ...

Jack,

I have an M-audio O2 usb midi controller. It works great! It's a bit clumsy to work out true keyboard parts with with though because its only 2 octaves. If you are going to use the controller as a keyboard, I would seriously look into getting a 4 octave controller

Scoops
I have a really fast computer, some good mics, vintage musical instruments, and lots of fancy software. Just need some talent

pHz - thanks for the reply. You understood me right and it wasn't an issue I just wanted to be sure the piano roll note/number configuration was not "driven" by the VST. Was looking for something to make using MIDI with notes a little easy thats all. And I totally forgot that you could render to a track - DOH! Thanks.

Thanks for the MIDI keyboard/controller examples too. I really got my eye on the one Scoops recommended as I really don't need more than 2 octaves.
