I'm just now getting into the world of VST and effects management, so excuse my ignorance. I've seen a few rackmounted hardware devices said to process the VST plugs externally, thus taking some load off your PC. Do you know if a secondary computer networked up can perform these same duties? Is there a program that supports external VST processing?

If not, what hardware would one recommend to really take the load off the workstation CPU?

Never used either of them, but V-Stack and FX Teleport fit the bill, I believe.

Indeed, FX Teleport it is.

Works better with Giga cards.

One thing I was wondering about FX Teleport and other similar proggies is do they require an ASIO soundcard on the remote computer?

AFAIK Fxteleport don't and wormhole do.

They require Ethernet.
Intel Core2 Quad CPU + 4 GIG RAM

I went with 3 computers the old school way.

lap - Midi Sequencer
pc1 - Chainer - Midi Module
pc3 - Audition - Audio Recorder

I've never been happier :D

Cubase has VST System Link.

You will need 2 or more computers with audio hardware and digital I/O's. In addition, the VST system link host application has to be installed on each computer.

One computer can run your VST instruments/effects and the other can be used to record the audio tracks.

Don't forget simple offline processing or freezing to free up CPU resources. Cubase SX can do Audio Processing - where you apply a plugin to a track and process it offline. That's easier than exporting the whole track as a wave file (with plugins applied) and then re-importing it.

what is the delay like for Fxteleport and can the host compensate for the delay if the host has pdc? i would like to know because i could use like 7 SIR plugs

Post

Yea, I'm also interested in additional latency issues and also how efficent you think this method is. Do you think you get an extra boost in processing power that comes close to the full power of the second PC? Sounds too good to be true.

Do you really achieve zero latency now with effects?

Great! I'll get it shortly after I get my second machine!
