sub-grouping drumkit - which pieces ?

I am fiddling about (I'm a home user) with racked Jamstix and can seperate various kit elements to one of 4 pairs of outputs for external (external to Jamstix) processing. How would folks group a kit in to 4 sections?

Are there any benefits to having each of the 4 groups on an individual track (instance of the rack per track) over just doing it in one rack with filters on teh various rack outputs rather than on the 4 tracks?

Hi Tim...
I set things up as follows...
Kicks - Channel 1 - Panned Left
Snares - Channel 1 Panned Right
Toms - Channel 2 (I leave the panning for each instrument as is)
HiHats/Cymbals/Other percussion - Channel 3 (Panning same as Toms)
Ambience - Channel 4

If you allowed Tracktion to autoconnect you will have to add a couple of outputs to get it all to work (if you decide to route each grouping to its own track).

Within the rack I take the kick (which is currently mono) and draw in two connections, the 1st to to the left channel of the 1st output track and the 2nd to the right channel of the 1st output track. I do the same with the snares for the 2nd output channel.
The other instruments are just routed right to right and left to left for each subsequent channel.

I have been adding effects outside of the rack as when you do them inside of the rack they get a bit cluttered. However, as I get closer to nailing down the sound I want I might do it all within the rack. That way I can save it as a preset and its more easily transferable to other projects.

The other thing do is route each of the individual tracks to another common track I call drums. This is where I put effects that I want to use on the whole drum track (maybe Ambience). And it also allows me to work with volume of the whole drum set. You get the same thing if you do this all from within the rack.

I don't have jamstix but I 've made a rack with five sfz's each one loaded with a different sfz file. The groups that I use are kicks, snares, hihats, toms and cymbals. I know that's 5 not 4 but you could group hihats and cymbals together.
Regarding your second question I prefer to have multiple instances of the rack and separate EQs, compressors etc separately after each instance. Seems more intuitive to me. Moreover if you want to use some convolution based reverb I think it's better to do it outside the rack (PDC compensation related problem I think; someone correct me if I 'm wrong)
A pro for the second approach (filters within the rack) it's that once you find the right components you save your rack and you have it immediately available.
If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain

thanks for the info and quick replies guys :D

darcy do you use the ambience track or have you found external reverbs etc work better? I was going to try a few and see if they have much going for them over the built-in ambience . . .

I do use the ambience track. I think it adds something that I can't get using external ambience. But I have also used added a small bit of reverb externally on occasion. You gotta be careful with that one though.

Cheers darcy and zeoy - much appreciated, I'll get a-fiddlin'
