Hi again,
Thanks for checking out the clips below, and giving your vote.

I promised to uncover the amp sims behind the clips - here were go:

Clip 1:
- Amp: Voxengo Boogex
- Settings: Cabinet 9 4x12 close (Lows -3,7 dB, Mids 1,3dB, Highs -6,1dB)

Clip 2:
- Amp: GuitarSuite JCM900
- Settings: High -> 0

Clip 3:
- Amp: Izotope Trash
- Settings: Box Model "Allston Classic", cut some highs off with the Post Filter

Clip 4:
- Amp: Voxengo Boogex
- Settings: Same as in clip 1
- The trick was that I recorded the quitar also acoustically using Neumann TLM 103 microphone. I simply mixed some of that to the Boogex guitar.

And the setup:
- Guitar: Ibanez AK85
- Pre amp: Focusrite Penta
- Sound card: MAudio Delta Audiophile
- SW: Sonar 4.0.3

Personally I liked Boogex the most (both clip1 and clip4). I was little surprised that you didn't like Trash at all - but it was just one sound. Trash has a big number of different amp/cabinet simulations, and I'm pretty sure there are sounds that would have pleased you too. I didn't like JCM900 at all - and I had very hard time to find the sound I wanted with any Guitar Suite amps.

But it's all matter of taste :)

(Note that all clips are ~800KB.)

Clip 1 all the way for me.

2 and 4 sound too bright, 3 is too muted in comparison to 1. 1 also fits in better with the band while still highlighting the guitar nicely as the solo/lead instrument. 4 sounds next best with the band.

Clip 1 is it for me, too....

though it's not the best I can imagine.... maybe some more compression to make it even more smooth...

does anybody know the Fender Princeton CHorus..... it has a Limiter built in before the second channel... that makes some very nice and smooth sounds

On purpose, the only effect I added above the amp sims was slight reverb. I tested also Kjaerhus Classic Chorus and some Mobulation plug-ins - they all sounded fabulous in this context and I certainly will use them in production.

Just to qualify my response... I'm listening through crappy notebook speakers. I'll take another listen later with a better system but I like the original clip - no amp simulation.

Clip 2 fits best in your current mix.
Clip 3 sounds cool by itself.

Post

I'd vote for 1 if I were voting for the sound outside the mix. But what's always most important is how a sound works in the final mix. So 2 seems to work best in the current mix . . . but not perfectly. It's a bit too bright and thin in that mix. Something between 1 & 2 (or 2 & 3) would work better in the mix IMHO.

Post

ditto. Number 1 is the best 'naked', but it's not quite right in the mix. I think it'd be easier to tweak a good base tone to fit it in a mix, though, than to completely redesign a tone.

1 is the best on its own as well as in the mix. Just lower it a bit and may be add some snap. Also make the rest of the mix a bit fuller in the mids and you'll be there.

2 seems like it's lacking bottom end but works nicely in the mix (maybe bring out the lows a bit more), 1 sounds good but could be quieter in the mix, 3 I like the general tone but it feels like it's lacking some dynamics, whereas 4 I didn't care for at all.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

in my small speakers, the best solo is the dry one
in a mix i think 2 is the best

IMHO:

1-the slight saturation works well, but maybe a too obvious sound.
2-i don't like it, too much fret and too "small" for my taste. almost phasey.
3-not my favourite, but i understand for jazz is ok. more dynamic than 1.
4-i like it! here the fret buzz gives a somewhat acoustic flavour. very dynamic and with character.

So in my order of preference 4-3-1-2.
I listened through Sony MDR7506 headphones.

I would go with the first clip also. The others are way to "bummy" for my taste.

Post

Listening through Sennheiser headphones my preference lies with clip 4 in the band. Without band I still like the dry sound...
