Fortunately, he does so for my recordings, so I'll still get to record it! I have the stuff to make another for myself, but will likely not get around to it for another week. I have that compressor to finish, as well as one of those PAIA Fatman synths.

Thanks! It's possible, but to be honest, I don't do commercial art much at all these days. Plus, since I had surgery on my hand, a painting like this one is quite painful, so I would be afraid to commit to it...

You should maybe make an extra for yourself - throwing pedals into the audio routing schemes of modular setups is always loads of fun.

Maybe you can work your way up to stuff like this.

I've been really getting into the whole "DIY" thing lately. I just finished building and painting this DIY fuzzbox for my buddy Ant Graham:





This was built from the "Tube Sound Fuzz" thing in Craig Anderton's "Electronic Projects For Musicians", and housed in a box from PAIA Electronics. I'll post some MP3s of it in action when I get Ant over here to record!

I have a question concerning the pre-printed boards you mentioned earlier. How do you actually do the board itself? This is really the thing which seemed mostly inaccessible to me. Some of them seem to have the board part of the kit like PAIA but let's say if you find a DIY link on the net, how do you actually do the circuit board?

Thanks, paradiddle! I am spending way too much time with this DIY stuff lately. It really is worth it. You can take any kit or schematic and make it your own with a little rearranging of component values and replacing mediocre components.

It is, of course, easier to use pre-printed circuit boards, and many places will sell you only the board if you like (CGS, for instance, onlys sells boards...you need to source the parts). If you have a schematic, but no way to buy a printed board, then you can do one of two things. First, if the circuit is simple, you can do point-to-point wiring, using a a perfboard and jumper wire. I've done a number of simple projects this way (theremin, and a few effects.). This particular project was simple enough for point-to-point wiring.

If the project is complicated, you could burn your own board. Most places that provide schematics also provide art for a printed circuit board. You have to take that art and print it on a piece of copper-clad board using etch resistant ink (this can be hand drawn or you can use something like rub-off graphics and copy the art. Radio Shack has those). Once the etch resist graphic is on the copper, you toss it into the etching solution and wait a bit. Afterwards, you take it out, wash it off and only the copper under the etch resist is left.

It's not too hard, but you'll throw away a couple before you get the hang of it.

If you don't have a pre-drawn graphic of the circuit traces, then you can make your own by following the schematic. You can make a breadboard version to be sure you have it working and then copy the circuit using those rub off graphics. Also, some computer programs can convert a schematic into traces (and check your signal along the way).

If you do DIY, making your own boards is a great way to go. You can do a lot more projects that you find online.
