More recently(-ish) I bought The Avalanches album, which I just thought was a completely incoherent mess, with two singles stuck in it. I took that back too...

"You're Gonna Miss Me" isn't EVEN that great a song, and the rest of the album's worse. And that f**king bibbly bobbly noise on every single track...

Reprazent - New Forms. Bought this on the strength of the Mercury Music prize hype and was sorely disappointed. Enjoyed Heroes and New Forms but the rest of it was dull as dishwater to me. I much prefer Roni's earlier work such as Music Box and It's A Jaaath Thing.

One Dove - Morning Dove White - the NME were raving on about them. An absolute yawnfest...

Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman... Bought this on the strength of the NME hype, and the excellent Cowgirl and Rez... Again, something of a disappointment, although I kinda like the end track. Prefer some of their later work on Second Toughest In The Infants.

I recently got the Ae/Hafler Trio album purely because its Autechre. Its a grower. I was dissapointed at first but I'd probably just been listening to some 'less minimal' music in the car and it had been delivered while I was out, so I stuck it sraight in the CD player.

I listened to it much later in the night next time and it went well with a couple of smokes.

Last great accidental discovery was Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar - heard a vague description from a mailing list, finally got some stuff and was impressed enough that I'll be releasing their fourth album on my own imprint next year. Over the years I've discovered most of the music I love the most this way. There have been serious dissapointments at times though.

They're nice people too. Most of them play in other bands that are totally different - two members are in the black metal band Woods of Infinity, and another is in some sort of prog/metal/math rock band while doing ambient music on the side.

Geoff Smith - Fifteen Wild Decembers. Bought it for a dollar having no idea of what it was, and it's still one of my top ten favourite albums.

On a more positive note "Trollhammeren" by Finntroll was a bit of a gamble, but blew me away - Finnish polka and Black Metal blended to perfection

I've noticed that with Pet Sounds, it's a love/hate relationship. I'm listening to it very often, but some people I know simply can't stand it. Others say 'oh, I know/like this song' when 'Wouldn't it be Nice' or 'God Only Knows' comes on, but other than that it does absolutely nothing to them. I had the exact same reaction to another classic - Sgt. Pepper's. I love 'Getting Better' and a couple of other songs [Lucy in The Sky] but 'A Day In The Life' - 'experimental', no doubt, but something I'd like to listen to more than a couple of times? I think not. Strange, considering how many people are in love with it [the above scenario repeats itself with Revolver, almost. I like Revolver more than Sgt. Pepper's but not that much ]
