I think Jaco Pistorius got many votes up to now, but I have to put in another one for him. First time when I heard Joni Mitchell's Mingus I was blow over with the bass. Not only one song, but the whole album was amazing.

Reach Out, Love Child... you're talking James Jamerson here. Almost all the old Motown stuff featured James on bass. A true monster

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned any of the Stax stuff like "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"- Duck Dunn's another monster.
